How do you prepare for a maths test? 7 tips teachers recommend

Most children do badly in a maths test not because they are not clever — but because they prepared the wrong way. Here are seven tips that experienced teachers use, and how you can help your child walk into the exam room with confidence.

A maths test is coming up — and you can feel the tension. The child is on edge, the parent is worried, and everyone knows you cannot learn everything in one night. The good news: proper preparation is possible in every year group, at every level — and without unnecessary pressure. This guide collects seven tips that experienced teachers recommend, with a short explanation of why each one works and what to do in practice.

Tip 1: plan 7–10 days ahead — not the night before

The human brain does not keep knowledge crammed in all at once. Research in cognitive psychology shows that long-term memory is built through spaced repetition — in other words, practising a little every day is far better than one long sitting two days before the test. That is especially true in maths, where every topic is built on the one before.

How do you do it? Ten days before the test, sit down with your child and write a plan together: which topics there are, how much time each one gets, and when the 'general revision' is. Split each topic into homework-sized sessions of 20–30 minutes — not hours. The evening before the test, practise only one short topic that feels safe, to finish with a feeling of success.

For parents: help your child write the timetable visually — a table on the wall, stickers, anything that makes the plan feel real. When there is a clear plan, there is less anxiety — because the child can see there is enough time and there is order. And when one day comes and the planned task does not get finished? No problem — just move it to the next day and adjust. Flexibility is part of the plan, not a failure of it.

Tip 2: find the weak topics — a diagnostic test before revising

A common mistake: revising what you already know, because it is comfortable and goes well. A pupil who is strong at addition will go over addition again and again — and arrive at the test with gaps in division. The solution is to do a short diagnostic test at the start of the preparation: 10–15 questions across all the topics that could appear in the test.

Analyse the results together: which questions were solved correctly? Which produced mistakes? Which were not attempted at all? Those are the topics that need the most time. Put them at the top of the plan, and give them the best hours of the day — not the tired ones after school.

Tip 3: focused practice — questions like the real test

Reading the textbook is a first step, but it does not prepare you for answering questions under pressure. The brain needs to practise the action itself — reading a question, understanding what is asked, choosing a method and carrying it out. So the central part of the preparation should be answering questions in a format as close as possible to the real test.

Ask the teacher for revision sheets or last year's tests. Look for questions of the same kind that were seen in class. Practise some 'higher-level' questions too — at least one or two — so that if an extension question appears, your child is not thrown.

An important recommendation: after each practice session, go through the mistakes together. Not to 'punish', but to understand what happened. Was it an arithmetic slip? Was the question misunderstood? Was a method missing? Every mistake is valuable information for improving.

Tip 4: explain out loud — the Feynman technique for children

Richard Feynman, the Nobel-prize-winning physicist, argued that if you cannot explain something simply, you do not really understand it. His technique works brilliantly for children: instead of reading the explanation in the book again, ask your child to explain the topic to you — as if you know nothing.

When a child explains out loud, their brain works in a completely different way from silent reading. They have to organise the knowledge, choose words, and check whether it makes sense. Every place where they get stuck or say 'oh, it's just like that' — is exactly a place that needs more work.

Try this: 'Explain to me how to solve an equation as if I were in Year 3.' Or 'Explain to me what a fraction is as if I were a little child.' The explanation does not have to be perfect — but the process itself strengthens deep understanding and reveals gaps in time.

Tip 5: a good night's sleep before the test

It may sound obvious, but it is one of the things that is easiest to give up on — and you must not. The research on sleep and memory is clear: the brain consolidates memory during sleep, especially in the REM stage. A child who sleeps seven to nine hours before the test will remember the material better than one who studied until midnight.

Lack of sleep also damages concentration, processing speed and problem solving — exactly the skills a maths test examines. A tired child will make routine arithmetic mistakes that do not reflect their knowledge.

Practical guidance: the night before the test, finish studying at a reasonable hour. A brief look over the key formulae, and no more. Turn screens off an hour before bed, and make sure the evening routine is calm. Body and brain will thank you on the morning of the test.

Tip 6: get the equipment ready the day before — pencil, rubber, ruler

A small thing that can cause huge stress: arriving at the test without a sharp pencil, without a decent rubber, or without a calculator when one is allowed. Getting the equipment ready the day before makes sure the morning of the test starts calmly and not with a panicked search.

Prepare the equipment together with your child the evening before. Put everything in the bag before bedtime. It is a small ritual that signals 'we are ready' — and reduces morning anxiety too.

Tip 7: managing time in the test itself

Even a child who knows all the material can lose marks through poor time management — spending 20 minutes on one hard question and not getting to the questions they know. It is worth teaching your child a rule of thumb: go through the whole test first, answer the safe questions first, and mark the hard ones to come back to.

Split the test time into three stages: (1) a first read — 3–5 minutes to skim the whole test and see what is there; (2) safe answering — answer everything you clearly know; (3) back to the hard questions — with the time left. If you are stuck on a question for more than 3 minutes — move on and mark it to return to.

Practise this rule at home too: when doing a practice sheet, set a time limit and practise not getting stuck. It is a skill that improves with practice, just like any other maths skill.

Test anxiety: what to do when the fear is bigger than the maths

Test anxiety is a real and common phenomenon — it is not weakness or laziness. Children with test anxiety can know the material at home and freeze in the exam room. The signs: a heavy stomach in the morning, 'I've forgotten everything' when they see the paper, sweaty hands, difficulty starting.

Things that help: deep breaths before going in (4 seconds in, hold for 4, 4 seconds out), verbal reassurance — 'you've got this, we practised', and encouragement to start with an easy question to build confidence. If the anxiety is extreme, it is worth talking to the teacher in advance about access arrangements.

For parents: avoid asking 'will you do well?' or 'have you revised enough?' — questions like that increase anxiety. Instead: 'we're proud of you because you prepared', 'hard isn't impossible', 'even if there are questions you don't know — that's OK'.

Frequently asked questions

How many days before the test should you start preparing?

Ideally — 7 to 10 days before. That allows the material to be split into small parts, each topic practised separately, and a general revision done two days before. Preparing for only a day or two creates pressure and damages long-term memory.

Which is better — reading the material again or answering questions?

Answering questions is always better. Reading creates a feeling of understanding, but only real practice reveals gaps and strengthens memory. Read the material briefly and then move on to questions — at least 70% of the preparation time.

My child can't concentrate for more than 15 minutes. What do we do?

That is completely normal, especially at primary age. Work in bursts of 15–20 minutes with a 5-minute break (the Pomodoro technique). Set a small goal for each burst — 'we'll do 5 questions' — not 'we'll study for an hour'.

What do we do if my child doesn't understand a topic even after explanations?

Try a different approach: a drawing, physical objects, a YouTube video. If that doesn't help — contact the teacher. Sometimes a gap from earlier years is blocking understanding — it is worth identifying and dealing with it.

Is a calculator allowed in the test?

It depends on the year group and the teacher. In Years 3–4 usually not. From Years 5–6 upwards sometimes yes for more complex calculations, and the KS2 SATs have one arithmetic paper with no calculator at all. Always check in advance with the teacher — and if it is allowed, make sure the batteries work and that your child knows how to use it.

How long should we study each day in the week before the test?

20–45 minutes a day — no more. Research shows that studying for too long reduces productivity. Thirty focused minutes are better than an hour and a half with distractions and a phone.

What do we do when my child panics in the exam room?

Teach them in advance: three deep breaths, then start with the easiest question they can see. Success on a first question releases the freeze. It is worth practising this technique at home during 'mock test' practice too.
