Geometry for Year 3: shapes, area and perimeter — everything you need

Your child in Year 3 is starting to learn geometry and you are not sure exactly what is taught and how you can help? This guide explains all the Year 3 geometry topics in simple language — with fun activities you can do together at home.

Why does geometry matter as early as Year 3?

Geometry is much more than just drawing squares and circles in an exercise book. When a child learns to recognise shapes, measure a perimeter and understand area, they develop spatial thinking — an ability that affects their success in later learning, from physics to architecture and design. Research shows that children with strong spatial thinking also do better in early maths topics such as fractions and equations.

Besides that — Year 3 geometry connects the classroom to the real world. A child who can recognise that a window is a rectangle, that a bicycle frame is made of triangles, and that a tin is a cylinder — looks at the world differently. It is maths you can touch, measure and see in every home.

Before you start practising on a sheet, go on a short walk around the house and ask your child to find 5 different shapes — in the windows, the floor, kitchen utensils and so on. It warms the brain up in the most natural way there is.

2D shapes: recognising them and their properties

In Year 3 children learn to recognise and describe six main 2D shapes. Recognition does not stop at the name — the child needs to know how many sides and corners (vertices) each shape has, and what is special about it.

It is important to explain to your child that a square is a special kind of rectangle — a rectangle in which all the sides are equal. So every square is a rectangle, but not every rectangle is a square. Many children get confused on this point.

Basic angles — acute, right, obtuse

Along with the shapes, Year 3 meets three kinds of angle. A right angle is exactly 90° — like the corner of a page. An acute angle is smaller than 90° — 'sharp' like the point of a needle. An obtuse angle is bigger than 90° — open and wide. A fun exercise: ask your child to turn their arm and stop at each kind of angle.

  • Obtuse angle — more than 90°, like a book opened wide

3D shapes: what you can hold in your hand

After getting to know the 2D shapes, Year 3 steps into the three-dimensional world. The difference is simple: 2D shapes are flat on paper, 3D shapes are objects you can hold. Your child will learn four main shapes:

  • Cube — 6 equal square faces, 12 edges, 8 vertices. Example from home: a dice, a square cardboard box.
  • Cylinder — 2 flat circles and a curved surface in the middle. Example: a drinks can, a kitchen roll tube.
  • Cone — a circular base and a sharp point. Example: an ice cream cone, a party hat.
  • Sphere — curved all the way round, no corners. Example: a football, an orange.

A recommended activity: collect 10 objects with your child from the kitchen and the playroom, and sort them by shape. You will be surprised how fast a child learns when they do it with their hands and not only with their eyes.

Hide an object in a bag and ask your child to identify the shape by touch alone. Whoever guesses right gets a point. It is an excellent exercise for developing spatial thinking — just like on MathsUK!

Perimeter: how much fence do you need around the garden?

Perimeter is the distance around a shape — the sum of all the sides. The best picture: imagine you want to put a fence around a garden. How many metres of fence do you need? That is exactly the perimeter.

In Year 3 children learn to work out the perimeter of two main shapes:

  1. Perimeter of a square: side × 4. If the side = 5 cm, the perimeter = 5 × 4 = 20 cm.
  2. Perimeter of a rectangle: (length + width) × 2. If the length = 8 cm and the width = 3 cm, the perimeter = (8 + 3) × 2 = 22 cm.

You can also work out the perimeter of any polygon by adding all the sides together — the formulae are just convenient shortcuts. Make sure your child understands the idea before memorising the formula.

An introduction to area: how many tiles fit?

Area is the amount of space a shape takes up inside — not just its boundary. The best picture: imagine you want to tile a room. How many tiles do you need? That is the area.

In Year 3 the approach to area is mainly hands-on rather than through formulae (the national curriculum introduces counting squares in Year 4, but many schools begin in Year 3). Children learn:

  • To count unit squares inside a shape (square by square)
  • To compare areas — which shape is bigger?
  • To understand that different shapes can have the same area
  • An introduction to the formula: area of a rectangle = length × width (this deepens in Years 4–5)

It is important to stress: perimeter and area are completely different things. Many children mix them up. Explain it like this: perimeter = the fence around the garden. Area = the grass inside the garden. Both are about the garden, but they measure different things.

Activities at home: learning with your hands

The best way to teach geometry is not through practice sheets — it is through touch and measurement. Here are six activities you can do together at home in under 20 minutes:

Activity 1 — measuring a room with a tape measure

Take a tape measure and measure the length and width of your child's bedroom together. Work out the perimeter (the total of all the walls) and the area (length times width). Ask: how many 1 m × 1 m rugs would fit in the room? That is a real area calculation.

Activity 2 — counting tiles in the kitchen

If you have a tiled floor, ask your child to count how many tiles are in a row and then how many rows there are. Simple multiplication = area! That is exactly what is learnt in Years 3–4.

Activity 3 — a shape hunt in a newspaper

Take an old newspaper and coloured pens. Ask your child to mark every shape they find in a different colour — squares in red, circles in blue, triangles in green. Whoever finds the most — wins.

Activity 4 — building shapes with lolly sticks

Lolly sticks (a fixed length) are excellent for understanding sides. Build a square from 4 sticks, a rectangle from 6 (2 doubled up), a triangle from 3. Ask: can you build a circle from sticks? (Not exactly — and that is why a circle has no straight sides.)

Activity 5 — drawing symmetry with folded paper

Fold a sheet in half, cut half a shape with scissors — and open it out into a complete symmetrical shape. That way your child experiences symmetry concretely: the fold line is the line of symmetry. Check afterwards: which shapes have a line of symmetry and which do not?

Activity 6 — digital practice with geometry games

A symmetrical shape is a shape that can be split into two identical halves. The line that splits it is called a 'line of symmetry'. The best way to explain: fold a sheet with the shape on it — if the two halves cover each other exactly, there is symmetry. A square has 4 lines of symmetry, a circle has infinitely many, and an equilateral triangle has 3.

What is the difference between an acute, an obtuse and a right angle?

A right angle = exactly 90°, like the corner of a square (marked with a little square). An acute angle = less than 90°, 'sharp' and narrow like the point of a pencil. An obtuse angle = more than 90° but less than 180°, open and wide. An easy way to remember: 'acute' = 'a cute little angle' — small and pointy.

The common mistake is to keep practising on paper when the child is struggling.
