Year 5 is a turning point in maths: the child moves from simple fractions to decimals, meets percentages for the first time and learns to tackle multi-step word problems. Above all, it is a year worth consolidating well, as early preparation for the KS2 SATs that arrive in Year 6. Year 5 is a real turning point in school maths. The child who only yesterday was dealing with simple fractions discovers a new world: decimals to three places, percentages, negative numbers in context, square and cube numbers — and it is all worth consolidating well ahead of the national assessment at the end of Year 6 (the KS2 SATs). As parents, knowing the curriculum gives you a huge advantage: you can spot a problem before it turns into a fear of maths.

🏆 A year worth consolidating well
There is no national test at the end of Year 5, but everything on this list is the foundation the Year 6 KS2 SATs will draw on — the arithmetic paper in particular leans heavily on the formal written methods and decimal work introduced this year. That is one reason Year 5 is considered an especially full year, and worth revising thoroughly.

Fractions — from ordinary fractions to decimals

Fractions are the backbone of Year 5. The child already knows simple fractions from Year 4, but this year the demands are much higher. They will learn to add and subtract fractions whose denominators are multiples of the same number (½ + ¼), to multiply a fraction by a whole number, to convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions, and at the same time will meet decimals properly — the natural continuation of the decimal number system.

Decimals: adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing

Decimals (such as 3.7 or 0.25) look simple, but mistakes lining up the decimal point are the number-one cause of dropped marks in the summer term. The rule: when adding and subtracting, line up the points; when multiplying, calculate first and put the point in at the end.

  • 3.5 + 1.27: line up by the decimal point and add a zero — 3.50 + 1.27 = 4.77
  • 2.4 × 3: work out 24 × 3 = 72, then count the digits after the point — 7.2
  • 6.3 ÷ 3 = 2.1: divide exactly as with whole numbers, then put the point in
  • Conversion: 3/4 = 0.75 — it is worth knowing the common fractions by heart
⚠️ A common trap
Many children write 3.5 + 1.27 = 4.57 instead of 4.77 — they add the 5 and the 2 without lining up. If your child does this, practise lining up the points on squared paper together before moving on to the calculation.

Percentages — the topic that looks scary but is simple

Percentages arrive in the summer term and feel completely new — but in practice they are just fractions with a denominator of 100. 30% = 30/100 = 0.3. The basic idea the child will learn: how to find a percentage of an amount (10% of 80 = 8), and what a percentage represents in relation to the whole.

  • 10% of a number = divide by 10
  • 50% = half the number
  • 25% = a quarter of the number
  • 1% of a number = divide by 100, then multiply as needed
  • Year 5 does not yet deal with complex discounts or interest — that comes in Year 6 and KS3

Negative numbers and square numbers — new worlds

In Year 5 the child meets negative numbers properly for the first time. At this stage it is a first acquaintance: the number line, comparing (−3 < −1), counting forwards and backwards through zero. The examples that help most: temperature below zero, floors below ground level, an overdrawn bank account.

Square and cube numbers

Squares are presented as 'repeated multiplication': 3² = 3 × 3 = 9. The child will learn the square numbers from 1² to 12², meet cube numbers (2³ = 8), and use the ² and ³ notation. Area problems for a square (s²) are the most common way squares are applied in a test.

Geometry — area, perimeter and shapes

In Year 5 the child moves from the area of a square and rectangle (learnt earlier) to compound shapes and estimating the area of irregular shapes. The key ideas the child needs to know:

  • Area of a rectangle: length × width
  • Area of a compound shape: split it into rectangles and add
  • Perimeter of a polygon: the sum of all the sides
  • Estimating area by counting squares, including half squares
  • Units: square centimetres (cm²), square metres (m²) — and converting between them

A common mistake: children confuse a missing side length in a compound shape with one that is given — always mark every side before calculating the perimeter. Practising with a ruler and drawing together is recommended.

Word problems and speed, distance and time

In Year 5 word problems jump a level: they need two or three steps of calculation and combine several topics at once. For example: 'A train travels at 80 miles per hour. After an hour and a half it stops for twenty minutes. How far has it travelled altogether?' — a question that combines speed, time, distance and two-step thinking.

The relationship: distance = speed × time

D = S × T is the first formula-like relationship the child meets. Beyond the direct calculation, it matters that they can rearrange it: if you know the distance and the speed, how do you find the time? (T = D ÷ S). You can draw it as the 'magic triangle' — distance on top, speed and time underneath.

  • Step 1: read the problem twice — once to understand, once to mark the information
  • Step 2: write down what is known and what is not (D = ? S = ? T = ?)
  • Step 3: choose the right calculation
  • Step 4: calculate and write a full answer in words
  • Step 5: check — is the answer reasonable?

A rule of thumb worth remembering: a child who can solve a word problem in orderly steps is actually in command of mathematical thinking — everything else is just tools.

Statistics: tables, line graphs and the mean

Year 5 statistics is about reading and interpreting information: completing and reading tables and timetables, and solving comparison and difference problems from a line graph. Many schools also introduce the mean as a first 'average', which becomes formal in Year 6:

  • Mean: the sum of all the values divided by the number of values
  • Reading a line graph: find the value at a point in time, and the difference between two points
  • Timetables: how long does the journey take? Which train do I need to catch to arrive by 10:00?
  • Two-way tables: reading across a row and down a column to find one cell

An example that helps: the class test scores — 70, 80, 80, 90, 100. The mean is 84. Ask: is 84 a fair 'typical' score for this class? Why or why not?

Sequences, units of measure and the 'rule'

Sequences and rules appear throughout the year: the child spots a pattern in a number sequence and continues it. For example: 2, 5, 10, 17, 26, __ — each time you add the next odd number. It is excellent practice for analytical thinking and prepares for algebra in Year 7.

Units of measure require remembering the conversion table: 1 km = 1,000 m, 1 m = 100 cm, 1 kg = 1,000 g, 1 litre = 1,000 ml. A common mistake: when converting areas, you multiply by 10,000 (1 m² = 10,000 cm²), not by 100.

What is the hardest topic in Year 5 maths?

According to teachers and parents, decimals — and especially multiplying and dividing them — are the most common source of difficulty. The confusion between lining up the decimal point and counting the digits after it causes errors that repeat themselves. Focused daily practice on this topic is the best solution.

Is there a national test in Year 5?

No. In England the national tests are the KS2 SATs at the end of Year 6 (and the Multiplication Tables Check in Year 4). Year 5 has no national test, but it is a year worth consolidating well — everything learnt in it is the basis for the SATs papers that arrive the following May.

When are percentages taught in Year 5?

Percentages are usually introduced in the summer term.
