What is the Year 7 end-of-year exam, exactly?
Every secondary school teaches Key Stage 3 maths (Years 7-9) to the National Curriculum programme of study, but the school itself decides the order of topics, the scheme of work, and how to assess. The end-of-year exam is the school's way of checking what has stuck across the whole of Year 7. It is important to be precise: it is not a national test like the KS2 SATs or GCSE — each school writes, sets and marks its own paper (many use commercial or exam-board-style papers), so the format and marks vary between schools. Check with your school what theirs looks like.
The difference between an end-of-year exam and an ordinary teacher's test is significant. A class test checks what the class learnt in the last few weeks, at that teacher's pace and with that teacher's emphasis. The end-of-year exam checks the whole year's content and does not depend on the pace of one particular class — it is written for the whole year group, and often has two or three tiers of paper matched to sets.
Why does this matter to parents? Because an exam like this gives a better picture of your child's level against the full Year 7 curriculum, and not just against the most recently taught topic. If the child gets good marks in class tests but struggles in this comprehensive exam, it is a sign of gaps in knowledge. And if they do well in it, you know they are built on a solid base and not just on memorising a specific topic.
It is important to understand that this is not a GCSE. It does not decide anyone's fate, but it can affect setting for Year 8, teachers' comments in the end-of-year report, and sometimes which tier the child is placed in later — depending on the school's policy. So it is worth investing in serious revision.
Which topics are tested in Year 7?
The Year 7 scheme of work is broad, and it helps you as parents to know the main headings so you can follow your child's revision. These are the key topics:
Integers and negative numbers — children meet negative numbers seriously for the first time: adding and subtracting with minus signs, and multiplying and dividing where the sign changes. It is one of the topics where the most pupils get confused, especially when minus signs are mixed with brackets. Fractions and decimals — adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing simple fractions, mixed numbers and decimals. Including converting between fractions and decimals and back, and simplifying and finding equivalent fractions.

Geometry — types of angle (acute, right, obtuse, reflex), angles on a straight line and around a point, the angle sum of a triangle (180°), types of triangle, perimeter and area of basic shapes (rectangle, square, triangle, parallelogram, trapezium), and often an introduction to the circle (circumference and area with π).
Ratio and proportion — understanding a ratio between two quantities, sharing in a given ratio, direct proportion, and using proportion in worded problems such as recipes or speed.

A four-week revision plan
Effective revision for an end-of-year exam needs at least one organised month. Here is a practical plan:
Week 1 — diagnosis and mapping the weak spots. This week the child should do one full mock paper without time pressure and without help. The aim is to see where they are strong and where there are gaps. After the paper, go over the mistakes together and mark them in a table: 'fractions — weak', 'geometry — fine', 'equations — middling'. That is the basis for all the revision.
Week 2 — focused practice on the weak topics. Spend 4-5 days a week, 30-40 minutes a day, only on the topics marked as weak. It is better to work on one topic per day and not jump around. If the child is weak in fractions, a whole day on fractions — adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, worded problems.
Week 3 — consolidating and mixing. Keep practising the weak topics, but add questions from the strong topics too so they are not lost. At the end of the week — a second mock paper, this time with a time limit of one hour. Compare with the week 1 result and see the improvement.
Week 4 — mock papers and calming down. The last week is devoted to 3-4 full mock papers, timed, under real exam conditions (no phone, no distractions). Between papers, go over the mistakes. Two days before the exam, stop the intensive practice — rest is more important than another hour of practice.

Five practical tips for revising at home
- **Write by hand, not on a computer.** The brain takes in a maths solution better when the hand writes it. Even if the questions come from the internet, the child should solve on paper with a pencil, write the intermediate steps, and not cut corners. There is no keyboard in the exam.
- **Fifteen minutes a day beats three hours at the weekend.** Consistency wins over one-off effort. A child who practises 15 minutes every day for a month will remember far more than a child who does a three-hour marathon once a week. Fix a regular time — after school, before tea, whatever works.
- **With every mistake — understand why.** It is not enough to say 'you got it wrong'. You need to understand: is it an arithmetic slip? A misunderstanding of the material? Misreading the question? Each type of mistake needs a different remedy. A child who identifies the type of mistake they make stops repeating it.
- **Use maths games.** The brain learns better when it is enjoying itself. Our quiz mode, or games like chess, sudoku and even card games for real pennies — all strengthen quantitative thinking. Practise for 20 minutes, play for 10.
- **Simulate exam conditions at least twice.** The child sits in a quiet room, no phone, with a clock in front of them, and works for an hour without a break. That experience alone significantly lowers anxiety in the real exam. Do not skip this step.
Common mistakes Year 7 pupils make
There are a few mistakes that recur in almost every Year 7 pupil, and it is worth knowing them so you can watch out:
Confusing x + 5 with 5x. The first says 'the unknown plus five', the second says 'five times the unknown'. It is a classic mistake of someone who has not yet internalised algebra. Practise with the child until it becomes automatic.
Forgetting the order of operations. Brackets, indices, multiplication and division, addition and subtraction — in that order (BIDMAS). A calculation like 2 + 3 × 4 equals 14, not 20. A child who gets this wrong will lose many needless marks in the exam.
Sign errors with negative numbers. −3 + (−5) is −8, not −2 or 2. −4 × −3 is +12, not −12. Every sign rule that has not been learnt creates a mistake. It is worth doing a practice sheet just on signs.
Rushing worded questions. The child sees '15% discount' and works out 15% of the price instead of 85% of it. The recommendation: in every worded question, underline the information in pencil and write in their own words what needs to be found.
How a parent can help (even if they do not know maths)
You do not need to know how to solve equations to help your child. Here are practical ways:
Sit next to them for 15 minutes without helping. Your presence alone, with no phone and no television, creates an atmosphere of seriousness. Do not try to teach — just be there. If the child asks something you do not know, say 'let's look on YouTube together' or 'write the question down and we'll check tomorrow'.
Check that they are not skipping questions. A quick look at their page after 20 minutes of practice. If you see them skipping the hard questions, that is a red flag. In the exam it is not allowed to skip without at least trying.
Encourage sleep before the exam. A child who sleeps 9 hours before an exam performs significantly better than a child who sleeps 6. The night before the exam — no practice after 8 pm, no screens after 9:30 pm, lights out by 10 pm.
A breakfast with protein. An egg, cheese, peanut butter — not just cereal and sugar. Protein releases energy over time and helps concentration through a long exam.
Frequently asked questions
When is the Year 7 end-of-year maths exam?
The date varies from year to year and from school to school. Most schools hold their Year 7 exams in the summer term, between May and July, often in a dedicated 'exam week'. It is worth asking the form tutor or the head of maths early in the year, so you have time to organise.
Does the end-of-year exam affect my child's report or set?
It depends on the school. In many schools the end-of-year exam is a major part of the end-of-year report grade and is used, together with classwork, to decide sets for Year 8. Some schools use it only for internal tracking. Check with the maths teacher what the policy is at your school.
What do we do if the child failed a previous maths test?
First — do not panic and do not punish. Failing a test is information, not a disaster. Sit down with the child, go over the test together and identify the types of mistake. If you see fundamental gaps, start a one-month plan on the model presented here. Most children improve dramatically with the right practice.
How long a day should we practise before the exam?
Twenty to forty minutes a day, five days a week, for a month before the exam. In the last week you can go up to 45-60 minutes a day with mock papers. More than that is usually no longer effective — a 12-13 year old's brain does not take in maths after an hour without a break.
Is a calculator allowed in the Year 7 exam?
It varies. Many schools set one non-calculator paper and one calculator paper, mirroring the GCSE structure; others set a single paper without a calculator. Check with the teacher whether a calculator is allowed in your school's exam, but the recommendation is to practise without one so the child is ready for either scenario.
What is the difference between the Year 7 exam and the KS2 SATs?
The KS2 SATs are national tests sat by every Year 6 child in May, marked externally and reported as a scaled score — they measure the school as much as the child. The Year 7 end-of-year exam is written and marked by the school's own maths department and focuses on the individual pupil's progress through the KS3 curriculum. Both are curriculum-based, but the purpose and use are different.
