Combinations of transformations and invariance
Combinations of transformations and invariance is content statement G8 of the DfE GCSE mathematics subject content, in the geometry area. It is Higher tier only, and it is examined without a calculator. What the specification says
The DfE subject content for GCSE mathematics states, verbatim: "Describe the changes and invariance achieved by combinations of rotations, reflections and translations." (statement G8). Every awarding organisation — Pearson Edexcel, AQA and OCR — must cover it, so the wording is the same whichever specification your school follows.
Tier
Higher tier only. A Foundation entry is never asked for this, so if you are sitting Foundation you can leave it out of your revision entirely.
Calculator
This is non-calculator territory. Questions on it belong naturally on Paper 1, where written method is all you have — so practise it that way rather than with a calculator to hand.
Common mistakes
- Applying the transformations in the wrong order. A rotation then a reflection is generally not the same as a reflection then a rotation.
- Describing the combined effect as two transformations when the question asks for the single transformation equivalent to them.
- Overlooking what has stayed invariant — a point or a line that has not moved is often exactly what the question is about.
