2048 Maths — a number-merging game

Merge matching tiles to create a bigger tile, and discover along the way how powers of 2 work.

What you practise here

Repeated multiplication, powers, and order of magnitude: every merge doubles a value, so the whole board is an exponential scale.

How to play

Swipe in a direction to slide every tile; two matching tiles that meet merge into one worth double. The game ends when no move is left.

Who it's for, and why it works

Year 3 to GCSE.

After a few rounds you stop counting — you just recognise that 256 is two steps from 64 — and that's the beginning of an intuition for powers that's hard to teach from a worksheet.
