⚖️ Foundation to Higher crossover check
The tier decision is made by the school, but it is made on evidence, and this sheet is designed to produce some. Every question on it sits in the crossover band — the grade 4 to 5 content that appears on both the Foundation and the Higher papers: multiplying out and factorising, solving linear equations and inequalities, straight-line graphs and gradients, ratio and proportion, Pythagoras' theorem, angle reasoning, and averages from a frequency table. A student who works through this comfortably has the foundation a Higher entry needs. A student who is guessing on half of it will almost certainly come away with a better grade from a Foundation paper they can attempt in full. Useful for a parents' evening conversation, and for a department deciding entries.
- 1.A regular nonagon has 9 sides. Work out the sum of its interior angles.
- 2.Solve 3x − 5 = 4.
- 3.Jamal invests £600 in a savings account paying 3% simple interest per year. Work out the total amount in the account after 4 years.
- 4.At a youth club the ratio of juniors to seniors is 3:5. There are 40 members altogether. Work out how many seniors there are.
- 5.A rectangular garden has its length and width in the ratio 5:3. Given that the perimeter of the garden is 64 m, work out the width of the garden.
- 6.A necklace is made using gold beads and silver beads in the ratio 7:3. There are 40 more gold beads than silver beads. Work out the total number of beads in the necklace.
- 7.Noah wrote down the numbers 9, 3, 7, 1, 5 and said, “The median is 7, because 7 is in the middle of my list.” Is Noah right? Give a reason for your answer.
- 8.A support strut for a shed roof is in the shape of a right-angled triangle. The two shorter sides of the strut are 5 m and 9 m. Work out the length of the sloping strut (the hypotenuse). Give your answer correct to 1 decimal place.
- 9.Work out the difference between 45% of 70 and 35% of 80.
- 10.A jug holds 3 litres of a drink that is 60% fruit juice. 1 litre of water is added to the jug. Work out the percentage of the new mixture that is fruit juice.
- 11.The sum of the interior angles of a polygon is 1980°. Work out the number of sides of the polygon.
- 12.In a shop a shirt costs £x and a pair of trousers costs £(2x + 30). Together the two items cost at least £150. Work out the lowest possible price of the shirt.
- 13.At an animal shelter, the ratio of cats to dogs is 2:5. There are 18 more dogs than cats. Work out the number of cats.
- 14.A recipe for pastry uses flour and butter in the ratio 3:2. A baker has 180 g of butter and wants to make pastry using all of it. Work out the total mass of pastry the baker can make.
- 15.Amelia's mean mark over four tests is 29. Her first three marks are 31, 26 and 26. Work out her fourth mark.
- 16.A pizza shop charges a fixed delivery fee of £3, plus £9 for each pizza ordered. Write down the function for the total cost y, in pounds, of ordering x pizzas.
- 17.In a spelling test the 20 pupils in Group A had a mean mark of 80, and the 30 pupils in Group B had a mean mark of 70. Work out the mean mark of all 50 pupils.

- (a) 1260° — The sum of the interior angles of a polygon with n sides is (n − 2) × 180°. For a nonagon, n = 9, so the sum is (9 − 2) × 180° = 7 × 180° = 1260°. 1620° uses 9 × 180° without subtracting 2 from n first. 140° is the size of a single interior angle of a regular nonagon (1260° ÷ 9), not the sum of all nine. 1440° uses (n − 1) × 180° = 8 × 180° instead of (n − 2) × 180°.
- (d) 3 — Method: add the constant term to both sides first, then divide by the coefficient of x. Working: 3x = 4 + 5 = 9; x = 9 ÷ 3 = 3. Answer: x = 3. −1/3 comes from a sign error when moving the 5, subtracting instead of adding: 3x = 4 − 5 = −1, then x = −1/3. 6 comes from subtracting the coefficient 3 instead of dividing by it: 9 − 3 = 6. 9 comes from correctly finding 3x = 9 but forgetting to divide by 3.
- (c) £672 — Simple interest per year = 3% of £600 = £18. Over 4 years the interest is 18 × 4 = £72. Total in the account = £600 + £72 = £672. A student who gives just the interest, without adding it to the principal, writes £72. A student who adds only one year's interest instead of four gets £600 + £18 = £618. A student who wrongly compounds the interest each year gets 600 × 1.03⁴ = £675.31.
- (d) 25 — Method: add the parts of the ratio, divide the total membership by the number of parts to find the value of one part, then multiply by the parts belonging to the group asked for. Working: 3 + 5 = 8 parts, 40 ÷ 8 = 5 members in one part, and the seniors are 5 parts, so 5 × 5 = 25. Answer: 25 seniors. The distractors: 15 is the number of juniors, which is the 3-part group; 5 is the size of one part only; 24 comes from dividing the 40 by 5, the seniors' number in the ratio, to get 8 and then multiplying that by 3.
- (c) 12 m — Method: the perimeter of a rectangle is twice the sum of the length and the width, so half the perimeter is one length plus one width; split that half using the ratio. Working: half of 64 is 64 ÷ 2 = 32 m, the ratio 5:3 has 5 + 3 = 8 parts, so one part is 32 ÷ 8 = 4 m, and the width is 3 × 4 = 12 m. So the width is 12 m. Distractor 20 m is the length, 5 parts, not the width. Distractor 24 m comes from splitting the whole perimeter, 64 m, into 8 parts and multiplying by 3, forgetting to halve the perimeter first. Distractor 8 m comes from the same slip stopped one step earlier: splitting the whole perimeter into 8 parts, 64 ÷ 8 = 8, and giving that instead of the width.
