⚖️ Foundation to Higher crossover check
The tier decision is made by the school, but it is made on evidence, and this sheet is designed to produce some. Every question on it sits in the crossover band — the grade 4 to 5 content that appears on both the Foundation and the Higher papers: multiplying out and factorising, solving linear equations and inequalities, straight-line graphs and gradients, ratio and proportion, Pythagoras' theorem, angle reasoning, and averages from a frequency table. A student who works through this comfortably has the foundation a Higher entry needs. A student who is guessing on half of it will almost certainly come away with a better grade from a Foundation paper they can attempt in full. Useful for a parents' evening conversation, and for a department deciding entries.
- 1.A sofa costs £800. Its price is increased by 25%. Work out the new price of the sofa.
- 2.The angles of a triangle are in the ratio 2:3:4. Work out the size of the smallest angle.
- 3.At a youth club the ratio of juniors to seniors is 3:5. There are 40 members altogether. Work out how many seniors there are.
- 4.Work out the median of these five numbers: 2, 4, 7, 12, 26
- 5.A company's profit this year is 130% of last year's profit. Last year's profit was £40,000. Work out this year's profit.
- 6.Factorise x² − 64.
- 7.Work out the equation of the straight line that passes through (−2, 3) and (4, −9).
- 8.Priya has a budget of £50 for a school trip. The coach costs £14 and each student ticket costs £4. Using the inequality 14 + 4s ≤ 50, work out the greatest number of student tickets, s, she can buy.
- 9.Three angles lie on a straight line. They measure 38°, 95° and x°. Work out the value of x.
- 10.A regular nonagon has 9 sides. Work out the sum of its interior angles.
- 11.Four books have 120, 200, 160 and 80 pages. Work out the mean number of pages.
- 12.A rectangular garden has length (x + 7) m and width (x − 7) m. Work out an expression for the area of the garden, giving your answer in its simplest form.
- 13.Solve 3(2x − 1) = 27
- 14.Solve 2(x + 3) = 10
- 15.Solve 2x + 1 = 9
- 16.A textbook is reduced from £60 to £45. Work out the percentage reduction.
- 17.An amount of money is shared in the ratio 1:2:3. The largest share is £90 more than the smallest share. Work out the total amount that was shared.
- 18.Grace asked 12 children how many brothers and sisters they have. Her results, in order, were 0, 0, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 6. Work out the median number of brothers and sisters.
- 19.In a shop a shirt costs £x and a pair of trousers costs £(2x + 30). Together the two items cost at least £150. Work out the lowest possible price of the shirt.
- 20.A straight line has equation y = 4x + 3. A second line is parallel to the first line and passes through the point (0, −5). Work out the equation of the second line.y = 4x + 3
