25 questions on the topics that decide a grade 4: percentages, ratio, area and perimeter, linear equations, averages and probability.
🎯 Grade 4 pass booster
A grade 4 is the standard pass that colleges, apprenticeships and employers ask for, and most students who miss it do not miss it on the hard questions — they miss it by dropping marks across the accessible ones. This sheet gathers twenty-five of those: percentage of an amount and percentage change, sharing in a ratio, area and perimeter of rectangles, triangles and compound shapes, solving a linear equation, reading the mean, median, mode and range from a list or a table, and simple probability. Nothing here is a stretch topic, and all of it is worth marks on every paper, on both tiers. Work through it, mark it honestly, and treat anything you got wrong as a priority over anything further up the specification — a secured mark is worth more than an attempted one.

Answer key
- (c) The mean, because every value counts towards it, so 100 pulls it from 7 up to about 20.3. — Method: work each measure out before the extra value is added and again afterwards, then compare the size of the two changes. Working: before, the six values total 42, so the mean is 42 ÷ 6 = 7, and the middle pair 6 and 8 give a median of (6 + 8) ÷ 2 = 7; after, the seven values total 142, so the mean is 142 ÷ 7 = 20.29 to 2 decimal places, while the median is now the 4th of the seven ordered values, which is 8; the mean has moved by about 13.3 and the median by 1. Answer: the mean, because every value counts towards it, so 100 pulls it from 7 up to about 20.3 — this is why the median is often preferred when a data set contains an outlier. The distractors: the reply that the mean rises by 100 adds the extra value to the mean instead of adding it to the total; the reply that the median moves to 12 takes the largest of the original values as the new middle instead of counting to the 4th of the seven values; the reply about even and odd counts quotes a rule that does not exist, since the median moved because a very large value was added, not because the count of values changed.
- (d) 240 cm² — Method: the area of a parallelogram is base × perpendicular height, and the perpendicular height is not the sloping side, so it must be found first from the right-angled triangle. Working: the sloping side is the hypotenuse, so the height squared is 13² − 5² = 169 − 25 = 144, giving a height of √144 = 12 cm; then 20 × 12 = 240. Answer: 240 cm². The distractors: 260 cm² comes from using the 13 cm sloping side as the height, 20 × 13, without going through the right-angled triangle at all; 120 cm² comes from finding the height of 12 cm correctly and then halving the product, (20 × 12) ÷ 2, which is the rule for a triangle and not for a parallelogram; 100 cm² comes from using the 5 cm along the base as the height, 20 × 5.
- (a) 16 — Method: keep the two rolls in order, first roll then second roll, and count every ordered pair the dice can land on, so a (2, 3) result is counted separately from a (3, 2) result. Working: the first roll can land on any of 4 numbers, and for each of those the second roll can also land on any of 4 numbers, giving 4 × 4 = 16 ordered pairs. Answer: 16. Watch out: writing down 8 comes from adding the two rolls' counts, 4 + 4, instead of multiplying them. Writing down 10 comes from listing unordered pairs, so (2, 3) and (3, 2) are counted as the same entry — that gives the 4 doubles plus 6 mixed pairs, 10 in total, instead of 16 ordered pairs. And writing down 4 comes from counting only one roll's outcomes and never pairing the two rolls together at all.
- (b) 10 — Corresponding angles are equal, so 5x + 4 = 3x + 24. Subtracting 3x from both sides gives 2x + 4 = 24, then subtracting 4 gives 2x = 20, so x = 10. 14 comes from adding the constants, 4 + 24, instead of subtracting them when rearranging. 19 comes from treating the angles as co-interior (summing to 180°): 5x + 4 + 3x + 24 = 180 gives 8x = 152, so x = 19. 20 correctly reaches 2x = 20 but stops without dividing by 2.
- (d) 6 — Method: collect the x-terms on one side and the constants on the other, then divide by the remaining coefficient of x. Working: 6x − 3x = 13 + 5, so 3x = 18, x = 18 ÷ 3 = 6. Answer: x = 6. 2.67 comes from a sign error when moving the 5, subtracting instead of adding: 3x = 13 − 5 = 8, x = 8 ÷ 3 ≈ 2.67. 2 comes from a sign error when moving the x-term, adding instead of subtracting: 9x = 18, x = 2. 18 comes from correctly finding 3x = 18 but forgetting to divide by 3.
- (a) 45% — Method: percentage increase = increase ÷ original amount × 100. Working: the increase is £116 − £80 = £36, and 36 ÷ 80 = 0.45, so 0.45 × 100 = 45%. Answer: 45%. The distractors: 36% comes from quoting the £36 increase as though pounds and per cent were the same thing; 31% comes from dividing the £36 increase by the new price £116 instead of by the original £80, which gives 31% to the nearest per cent; 145% is the new price written as a percentage of the original price, which is the whole of the new price rather than the increase.
- (d) 5/12 — The possible totals are 2 to 12. The prime totals are 2, 3, 5, 7 and 11, with 1, 2, 4, 6 and 2 ways to make them, giving 1 + 2 + 4 + 6 + 2 = 15 outcomes out of 36, so the probability is 15/36 = 5/12. Choosing 7/18 comes from forgetting that a total of 2 counts as prime, giving 14/36 = 7/18 instead. Choosing 19/36 comes from wrongly including a total of 9 as a prime number, adding its 4 ways to the correct 15 to get 19/36. Choosing 13/36 comes from forgetting the 2 ways of making a total of 11, giving 13/36 instead of 15/36.
- (a) 100 — The difference between the parts of the ratio is 7 − 3 = 4 parts, and this is worth 40 beads. Divide to find one part: 40 ÷ 4 = 10. The total number of parts is 7 + 3 = 10, so the total number of beads is 10 × 10 = 100. (40 is just the given difference between gold and silver, not the total. 70 is the number of gold beads only, using 7 parts. 30 is the number of silver beads only, using 3 parts.)
- (a) 8,000,000 cm³ — Method: change the edge length into centimetres first and then cube it, because 1 m = 100 cm and a volume needs that conversion applied to all three dimensions. Working: 2 m = 2 × 100 = 200 cm, so the volume is 200 × 200 × 200. 200 × 200 = 40,000 and 40,000 × 200 = 8,000,000. Answer: 8,000,000 cm³. The distractors: 8,000 cm³ comes from converting 2 m to 20 cm and cubing that; 80,000 cm³ comes from cubing in metres to get 8 m³ and then multiplying by 10,000, the conversion factor for an area rather than the 1,000,000 a volume needs; 8 cm³ comes from cubing the 2 without converting at all and simply writing cm³ because the question asked for that unit.
- (d) 19% — Method: write each decrease as a multiplier, multiply the multipliers, then compare the result with 100%. Working: a 10% decrease is a multiplier of 0.9, so the two reductions together give 0.9 × 0.9 = 0.81; the final price is 81% of the original, so the price has fallen by 100% − 81% = 19%. Answer: an overall decrease of 19%. The distractors: 20% comes from adding the two reductions, 10% + 10%, which charges the second 10% against the original price instead of against the already reduced price; 21% comes from using the increase multiplier by mistake, since 1.1 × 1.1 = 1.21, and reading that 21% as a decrease; 81% is the percentage of the original price still being paid, not the percentage taken off.
- (b) 60 cm² — Method: the area of a triangle is half the base multiplied by the perpendicular height, and here the perpendicular height is the 12 cm, not the sloping side. Working: 10 × 12 = 120, then 120 ÷ 2 = 60. Answer: 60 cm². The distractors: 65 cm² comes from using the sloping side of 13 cm as the height, (10 × 13) ÷ 2; 120 cm² comes from using the right two lengths but forgetting to halve, 10 × 12; 78 cm² comes from taking 13 cm and 12 cm as the base and the height and ignoring BC altogether, (13 × 12) ÷ 2.
- (c) 21% — Method: an increase of 10% is a multiplier of 1.1, and two successive increases are found by multiplying the multipliers. Working: 1.1 × 1.1 = 1.21, so the rent is 121% of the original, which is an increase of 21%. Answer: 21%. The distractors: 20% comes from adding the two percentages, which ignores that the second 10% is taken of a larger amount; 121% is the multiplier written as the change rather than the change itself; 11% comes from slipping in the multiplication and getting 1.11 instead of 1.21.
- (b) 1/4 — There are 4 × 4 = 16 equally likely ordered outcomes for the two dice. The pairs that total 5 are: first dice 1 with second dice 4; first dice 2 with second dice 3; first dice 3 with second dice 2; and first dice 4 with second dice 1 — which is 4 outcomes, so the probability is 4/16 = 1/4. A candidate who answers 1/8 has listed only 2 of the four pairs, forgetting that first dice 1 with second dice 4 and first dice 4 with second dice 1 are separate outcomes because the dice are different. A candidate who answers 3/16 has found 3 pairs instead of 4, missing one from the list. A candidate who answers 1/16 has counted only a single pair, such as first dice 2 with second dice 3, and treated the order of the dice as not mattering.
- (a) 40 — Method: the mean is the total divided by how many values there are, so rearranging gives total = mean × number of values. Working: the mean is 8 and there are 5 numbers, so the total is 8 × 5 = 40. Answer: 40, and checking, 40 ÷ 5 = 8, which is the mean given. The distractors: 13 comes from adding the mean and the count, 8 + 5, instead of multiplying them; 1.6 comes from dividing the mean by the count, 8 ÷ 5, which reverses the relationship; 8 comes from quoting the mean itself as the total, which is only true when there is a single number.
- (d) £50 — Area = 1/2 × (3.5 + 6.5) × 4 = 1/2 × 10 × 4 = 20 m². Cost = 20 × £2.50 = £50. (£100 comes from forgetting to halve the trapezium area, giving 40 m² instead of 20 m²; £65 comes from using only the longer parallel side, 6.5 × 4 = 26 m², instead of the trapezium formula; £35 comes from adding all three given lengths, 3.5 + 6.5 + 4, and treating that total as the area in square metres.)
- (a) 20 litres — Volume of water = length × width × depth of water = 40 × 25 × 20 = 20 000 cm³. Since 1000 cm³ = 1 litre, divide by 1000: 20 000 ÷ 1000 = 20 litres. A pupil who uses the full height of the tank, 30 cm, instead of the water depth, 20 cm, gets 40 × 25 × 30 = 30 000 cm³ = 30 litres. A pupil who forgets to convert cm³ to litres at all gives 20 000 litres. A pupil who divides by 1000 twice by mistake gets 20 000 ÷ 1000 ÷ 1000 = 0.02 litres. The correct volume of water is 20 litres.
- (c) £3,200 — Method: find the value of one part of the ratio from the first investor's amount, then work out the second investor's share before adding both together. Working: £1,200 is 3 parts, so one part is £1,200 ÷ 3 = £400. The second investor's share is 5 × £400 = £2,000, and the total is £1,200 + £2,000 = £3,200. So the total invested is £3,200. Distractor £2,000 is only the second investor's share, without adding the first investor's £1,200. Distractor £2,400 comes from doubling the first investor's amount instead of using the ratio. Distractor £6,000 comes from multiplying £1,200 by 5 directly instead of first finding the value of one part.
- (a) 20 cm — Method: match the measurement you are given to its own part of the ratio, use it to find the value of one part, then multiply by the parts belonging to the measurement asked for. Working: the length is the second measurement listed, so it matches 4 parts and one part = 16 ÷ 4 = 4 cm; the height is 5 parts, so 5 × 4 = 20. Answer: 20 cm. The distractors: 12 cm is the width, which is the 3-part measurement; 4 cm is the value of one part only; 80 cm comes from multiplying the 16 cm by 5 without first dividing by the 4 parts the length is worth.
- (b) 54 cm² — Area of a parallelogram = base × perpendicular height = 9 × 6 = 54 cm². (27 cm² comes from halving the product as if it were a triangle, 1/2 × 9 × 6; 15 cm² comes from adding the base and height instead of multiplying, 9 + 6; 30 cm² comes from doubling the sum of the base and height, as if finding a perimeter, 2 × (9 + 6).)
- (b) 80% — Percentage = (40 ÷ 50) × 100 = 80%.
- (b) −1% — Method: write each change as a multiplier and multiply them. A 10% fall is × 0.9 and a 10% rise is × 1.1. Working: 0.9 × 1.1 = 0.99, so the final price is 99% of the original, which is 1% less. Answer: an overall change of −1%. The distractors: 0% comes from assuming a 10% fall and a 10% rise cancel — they do not, because the rise is 10% of a smaller amount; +1% has the size right but the sign wrong, from reading the multiplier 0.99 as 1% above 1 instead of 1% below it; −2% comes from finding the 1% fall and then counting it once for each of the two changes.
- (d) x = 6 — Method: with an unknown on both sides, first collect the x terms on one side by subtracting the smaller x term from both sides, then deal with the numbers. Working: subtracting x from both sides gives x + 7 = 13, and subtracting 7 from both sides gives x = 6. Answer: x = 6. The distractors: x = 20 comes from adding 7 to 13 instead of subtracting it once the x terms have been collected; x = 2 comes from collecting the x terms by adding them, giving 3x + 7 = 13 and then 3x = 6; x = −6 comes from subtracting 2x from both sides to get 7 = −x + 13, reaching −6 = −x and then copying the sign straight across instead of dividing by −1.
- (c) 140 — Method: the mean shares the total equally between the items, so add the values and then divide by how many there are. Working: the total is 120 + 200 + 160 + 80 = 560 pages and there are 4 books, so the mean is 560 ÷ 4 = 140 pages. Answer: 140. The distractors: 560 comes from stopping at the total number of pages and never dividing by 4; 280 comes from dividing the total by 2 instead of by the 4 books; 120 comes from working out the range, 200 − 80, which measures spread instead of centre.
- (d) 60° — Method: the six angles at the centre together make one complete turn of 360°, and because the hexagon is regular they are all equal, so divide 360° by 6. Working: 360 ÷ 6 = 60. Answer: 60°. The distractors: 120° is the interior angle of a regular hexagon, 720 ÷ 6, which is the angle at a vertex and not the angle at the centre; 45° comes from dividing 360 by 8, treating the hexagon as though it had eight sides; 30° comes from halving the angle at the centre, as though each of the six triangles were split again by a line of symmetry.
- (b) 140 cm² — Method: the area of a trapezium is the mean of the two parallel sides multiplied by the perpendicular height. Working: (16 + 24) ÷ 2 = 20, then 20 × 7 = 140. Answer: 140 cm². The distractors: 280 cm² comes from multiplying the sum of the parallel sides by the height, (16 + 24) × 7, and forgetting to halve; 168 cm² comes from using only the longer parallel side, 24 × 7, as though the shape were a rectangle; 47 cm comes from adding all three given lengths, 16 + 24 + 7, which gives a length rather than an area.
