25 questions on the topics that decide a grade 4: percentages, ratio, area and perimeter, linear equations, averages and probability.
🎯 Grade 4 pass booster
A grade 4 is the standard pass that colleges, apprenticeships and employers ask for, and most students who miss it do not miss it on the hard questions — they miss it by dropping marks across the accessible ones. This sheet gathers twenty-five of those: percentage of an amount and percentage change, sharing in a ratio, area and perimeter of rectangles, triangles and compound shapes, solving a linear equation, reading the mean, median, mode and range from a list or a table, and simple probability. Nothing here is a stretch topic, and all of it is worth marks on every paper, on both tiers. Work through it, mark it honestly, and treat anything you got wrong as a priority over anything further up the specification — a secured mark is worth more than an attempted one.

Answer key
- (d) 3 — Method: add the constant term to both sides first, then divide by the coefficient of x. Working: 3x = 4 + 5 = 9; x = 9 ÷ 3 = 3. Answer: x = 3. −1/3 comes from a sign error when moving the 5, subtracting instead of adding: 3x = 4 − 5 = −1, then x = −1/3. 6 comes from subtracting the coefficient 3 instead of dividing by it: 9 − 3 = 6. 9 comes from correctly finding 3x = 9 but forgetting to divide by 3.
- (c) £3,200 — Method: find the value of one part of the ratio from the first investor's amount, then work out the second investor's share before adding both together. Working: £1,200 is 3 parts, so one part is £1,200 ÷ 3 = £400. The second investor's share is 5 × £400 = £2,000, and the total is £1,200 + £2,000 = £3,200. So the total invested is £3,200. Distractor £2,000 is only the second investor's share, without adding the first investor's £1,200. Distractor £2,400 comes from doubling the first investor's amount instead of using the ratio. Distractor £6,000 comes from multiplying £1,200 by 5 directly instead of first finding the value of one part.
- (b) £52,000 — Method: convert 130% to a decimal multiplier and multiply it by last year's profit. Working: 130% = 1.3, so this year's profit is £40,000 × 1.3 = £52,000. Answer: £52,000. £12,000 comes from using only the extra 30% (130% − 100%) and forgetting to include the original 100%, £40,000 × 0.3 = £12,000. £40,130 comes from simply adding 130 onto £40,000, treating the percentage as an amount of money rather than a multiplier. £5,200 comes from misreading 130% as 13%, giving £40,000 × 0.13 = £5,200.
- (c) 33 — Method: multiply the mean by the number of tests to get the total marks, then subtract the marks that are already known. Working: four tests with a mean of 29 give a total of 29 × 4 = 116 marks; the first three marks total 31 + 26 + 26 = 83; so the fourth mark is 116 − 83 = 33. Answer: 33, and checking, (31 + 26 + 26 + 33) ÷ 4 = 116 ÷ 4 = 29. The distractors: 116 comes from stopping at the total for all four tests; 29 comes from assuming the missing mark must be the mean itself; 4 comes from multiplying the mean by 3, the number of marks given, leaving 87 − 83 = 4.
- (a) 1260° — The sum of the interior angles of a polygon with n sides is (n − 2) × 180°. For a nonagon, n = 9, so the sum is (9 − 2) × 180° = 7 × 180° = 1260°. 1620° uses 9 × 180° without subtracting 2 from n first. 140° is the size of a single interior angle of a regular nonagon (1260° ÷ 9), not the sum of all nine. 1440° uses (n − 1) × 180° = 8 × 180° instead of (n − 2) × 180°.
- (c) 10 — There are 5 possible cards and 2 possible coin results, so listing every pair gives 5 × 2 = 10 equally likely outcomes. Choosing 5 comes from listing only the card outcomes and forgetting the coin flip adds a second stage to each one. Choosing 7 comes from adding the two stages instead of combining them, 5 + 2 = 7, rather than pairing every card with every coin result. Choosing 20 comes from counting each coin result twice for every card, 5 × 2 × 2 = 20, effectively pairing every card with the coin twice over.
- (d) 240 cm² — Method: the area of a parallelogram is base × perpendicular height, and the perpendicular height is not the sloping side, so it must be found first from the right-angled triangle. Working: the sloping side is the hypotenuse, so the height squared is 13² − 5² = 169 − 25 = 144, giving a height of √144 = 12 cm; then 20 × 12 = 240. Answer: 240 cm². The distractors: 260 cm² comes from using the 13 cm sloping side as the height, 20 × 13, without going through the right-angled triangle at all; 120 cm² comes from finding the height of 12 cm correctly and then halving the product, (20 × 12) ÷ 2, which is the rule for a triangle and not for a parallelogram; 100 cm² comes from using the 5 cm along the base as the height, 20 × 5.
- (b) 4% — Method: find the total interest earned, share it equally across the number of years to find one year's interest, then write it as a percentage of the amount invested. Working: total interest = £840 − £750 = £90, so one year's interest is £90 ÷ 3 = £30, and £30 as a percentage of £750 is (£30 ÷ £750) × 100 = 4%. Answer: 4%. 12% comes from treating the total interest of £90 as if it were earned in a single year, (£90 ÷ £750) × 100 = 12%, forgetting to divide by 3 years. 0.04% comes from finding the correct decimal, £30 ÷ £750 = 0.04, but forgetting to multiply by 100 to convert it into a percentage. 112% comes from writing the final amount, £840, as a percentage of the amount invested, £750, without first subtracting the £750 to find the interest alone.
- (a) 49° — Method: an exterior angle of a triangle equals the sum of the two interior angles that are not next to it, which here are the angles at A and at C; since those two are equal, the exterior angle is twice the angle at A. Working: 2 × angle A = 98, so angle A = 98 ÷ 2 = 49. Answer: 49°. The distractors: 82° is the interior angle at B, 180 − 98, given in place of the angle at A; 41° comes from finding that interior angle of 82° and halving it, 82 ÷ 2, instead of halving the exterior angle; 98° comes from taking the exterior angle to be equal to the angle at A on its own, with no halving at all.
- (a) 65° — Method: a line that divides an angle into two equal parts gives each part half of the original angle, so halve 130°. Working: 130 ÷ 2 = 65. Answer: 65°. The distractors: 130° is the whole of angle ABC, written down without halving it; 50° comes from working out 180 − 130, using the angles on a straight line instead of dividing the angle in two; 32.5° comes from dividing by 4 instead of by 2, as though the line split the angle into four equal parts.
- (d) 68 cm² — Method: the area of a parallelogram is base × perpendicular height. Working: 4 × 17 = 68. Answer: 68 cm². The distractors: 34 cm² comes from halving the product, which is the rule for a triangle and not for a parallelogram; 42 cm comes from treating the two given lengths as the sides of the shape and working out a perimeter, 2 × (4 + 17), which is a length and not an area; 21 cm comes from adding the base and the height, 4 + 17, instead of multiplying them.
- (d) 3/20 — The probability of taking a red ball from Bag A is 3/5, and the probability of taking a red ball from Bag B is 1/4. Since the two picks are independent, the probabilities are multiplied: 3/5 × 1/4 = 3/20. A candidate who answers 4/9 has added the numerators and added the denominators, (3+1)/(5+4), instead of multiplying the two fractions. A candidate who answers 17/20 has added the two fractions, 3/5 + 1/4, instead of multiplying them. A candidate who answers 3/25 has misread Bag B as also containing 5 balls, using 1/5 instead of 1/4.
- (d) £270 — Method: the £90 is a difference between two shares, so turn it into a number of parts before finding the value of one part. Working: the largest share is 3 parts and the smallest is 1 part, so the difference is 3 − 1 = 2 parts and 2 parts are worth £90; one part = £90 ÷ 2 = £45; the whole amount is 1 + 2 + 3 = 6 parts, so 6 × £45 = £270. Answer: £270. The distractors: £540 comes from treating the £90 as the value of one part and multiplying it by the 6 parts; £180 comes from finding the £45 correctly but adding only the 1-part and 3-part shares and forgetting the middle share; £135 comes from multiplying £45 by 3 and giving the largest share instead of the total.
- (c) £90 — Method: split the total amount into the number of parts shown by the ratio, then find Chloe's share. Working: the ratio 2:3 has 2 + 3 = 5 parts, so one part is £150 ÷ 5 = £30, and Chloe's share is 3 × £30 = £90. So Chloe receives £90. Distractor £60 is Ben's share, not Chloe's. Distractor £75 comes from splitting the money into two equal halves, ignoring the ratio. Distractor £30 is the value of one part, found correctly but never multiplied by 3.
- (a) 40 — Method: the mean is the total divided by how many values there are, so rearranging gives total = mean × number of values. Working: the mean is 8 and there are 5 numbers, so the total is 8 × 5 = 40. Answer: 40, and checking, 40 ÷ 5 = 8, which is the mean given. The distractors: 13 comes from adding the mean and the count, 8 + 5, instead of multiplying them; 1.6 comes from dividing the mean by the count, 8 ÷ 5, which reverses the relationship; 8 comes from quoting the mean itself as the total, which is only true when there is a single number.
- (c) 7 — Method: the median is the middle value when the data are written in order of size, and with an odd number of values there is exactly one middle value. Working: the numbers are already in order, 2, 4, 7, 12, 26, and there are 5 of them, so the middle position is the third and the value sitting there is 7. Answer: 7, with two values below it and two above it. The distractors: 10.2 comes from working out the mean, 51 ÷ 5, instead of the median; 14 comes from taking the value halfway between the smallest and the largest, (2 + 26) ÷ 2; 24 comes from working out the range, 26 − 2, which measures spread rather than centre.
- (a) 96 cm² — Method: a cube has six identical square faces, so the total surface area is six times the area of one face. Working: one face has area 4 × 4 = 16 cm², and 6 × 16 = 96. Answer: 96 cm². The distractors: 16 cm² is the area of a single face, from stopping before multiplying by the six faces; 64 cm³ comes from working out the volume, 4 × 4 × 4, which is a different measure and carries a different unit; 24 cm² comes from multiplying the six faces by the edge length, 6 × 4, instead of by the area of a face.
- (c) a decrease of 25% — Method: use multipliers. An increase of 50% is × 1.5 and a decrease of 50% is × 0.5. Working: 1.5 × 0.5 = 0.75, so the final price is 75% of the original. Answer: a decrease of 25%. The distractors: no change comes from assuming +50% and −50% cancel; a decrease of 50% comes from applying only the second change; an increase of 25% has the direction wrong.
- (a) 32 cm² — Area of a trapezium = 1/2 × (sum of parallel sides) × height = 1/2 × (5 + 11) × 4 = 1/2 × 16 × 4 = 32 cm². (64 cm² comes from forgetting to halve the product; 44 cm² comes from using only the longer parallel side, 11 × 4, instead of both parallel sides; 20 cm² comes from adding all three given lengths together, 5 + 11 + 4, instead of using the area formula.)
- (d) 1/8 — Method: a run of flips of a fair coin gives equally likely sequences of heads and tails, so count the sequences that match and divide by how many sequences there are. Working: each flip lands two ways and no flip affects another, so three flips give 2 × 2 × 2 = 8 equally likely sequences: HHH, HHT, HTH, HTT, THH, THT, TTH and TTT. Only HHH has a head at every flip, so 1 sequence of the 8 matches. Answer: the probability is 1/8. The distractors: 1/4 comes from treating 'three heads', 'two heads', 'one head' and 'no heads' as four equally likely results, which they are not, since one sequence gives three heads and three sequences give two; 1/6 comes from taking the number of sequences to be 2 + 2 + 2 = 6, adding the two ways each flip can land instead of multiplying them; 1/2 comes from reading the first flip only and giving the probability of a head on one flip, without combining it with the other two.
- (c) 80 — Method: the range is a measure of spread and is found by subtracting the smallest value from the largest. Working: the largest number sold is 100 and the smallest is 20, so the range is 100 − 20 = 80. Answer: 80. The distractors: 100 comes from writing down the largest value and never subtracting the smallest; 60 comes from working out the median, the middle value of 20, 40, 60, 70, 100, instead of the range; 58 comes from working out the mean, 290 ÷ 5, which measures centre rather than spread.
- (b) No — in order the numbers are 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, so the median is 5. — Method: the median is the middle value of the data in order of size, so the data must be sorted before any position is read off. Working: Noah's list 9, 3, 7, 1, 5 is not in order; sorted it becomes 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and with 5 values the middle position is the third, which now holds 5 rather than 7. Noah has read the third value of the unsorted list. Answer: no — in order the numbers are 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, so the median is 5. The distractors: the reply giving 3 as the median sorts the data correctly but then reads the value in the second place instead of the third; the reply that 7 is the third number he wrote accepts a position in the unsorted list, which is exactly the mistake the question is about; the reply using the mean claims a value of 7 for it, but the mean is 25 ÷ 5 = 5, so that reasoning is false as well.
- (a) 1/10 — There are 4 × 5 = 20 equally likely outcomes in total. The pairs whose product is 12 are Spinner A showing 3 with Spinner B showing 4, and Spinner A showing 4 with Spinner B showing 3, which is 2 outcomes, giving a probability of 2/20 = 1/10. Choosing 1/20 comes from finding only one of the two pairs, (3, 4), and missing (4, 3) as a separate outcome. Choosing 1/8 comes from using 16 as the total number of outcomes, 4 × 4, forgetting that Spinner B has 5 sections rather than 4. Choosing 1/5 comes from listing the factor pairs of 12 as 2 × 6 and 3 × 4 and counting each one in both orders, (2, 6), (6, 2), (3, 4) and (4, 3), giving 4 outcomes out of 20 without checking that neither spinner has a 6 on it.
- (d) x = 2 — Method: expand the bracket by multiplying both terms inside it by 2, then undo the addition and the multiplication in turn. Working: expanding gives 2x + 6 = 10; subtracting 6 from both sides gives 2x = 4; dividing both sides by 2 gives x = 2. Answer: x = 2. The distractors: x = 5 comes from dividing both sides by 2 first, reaching x + 3 = 5 and writing 5 without taking the 3 away; x = 8 comes from adding 6 to both sides instead of subtracting it, giving 2x = 16; x = 3.5 comes from expanding 2(x + 3) as 2x + 3, multiplying only the x by the 2, which leads to 2x = 7.
- (a) 62.5 — Method: a mean cannot be averaged with a new value — rebuild the total, add the new value to it, then divide by the new count. Working: three numbers with a mean of 50 have a total of 50 × 3 = 150; adding 100 makes the total 150 + 100 = 250; there are now 4 numbers, so the new mean is 250 ÷ 4 = 62.5. Answer: 62.5. The distractors: 75 comes from averaging the old mean with the new value, (50 + 100) ÷ 2, which ignores that three numbers pull against one; 50 comes from assuming an extra value leaves the mean unchanged; 37.5 comes from dividing the old total of 150 by the new count of 4, adding the new value to the count but not to the total.
