25 questions on the topics that decide a grade 4: percentages, ratio, area and perimeter, linear equations, averages and probability.
🎯 Grade 4 pass booster
A grade 4 is the standard pass that colleges, apprenticeships and employers ask for, and most students who miss it do not miss it on the hard questions — they miss it by dropping marks across the accessible ones. This sheet gathers twenty-five of those: percentage of an amount and percentage change, sharing in a ratio, area and perimeter of rectangles, triangles and compound shapes, solving a linear equation, reading the mean, median, mode and range from a list or a table, and simple probability. Nothing here is a stretch topic, and all of it is worth marks on every paper, on both tiers. Work through it, mark it honestly, and treat anything you got wrong as a priority over anything further up the specification — a secured mark is worth more than an attempted one.
- 1.Freya is designing a triangular flower bed. Two of its corners have equal angles, and the angle at the third corner is 40°. Work out the size of one of the two equal corner angles.
- 2.The marks scored by four pupils in a quiz were 8, 8, 8, 8. Work out the mean, the median and the mode of these marks.
- 3.A sofa costs £800. Its price is increased by 25%. Work out the new price of the sofa.
- 4.Two ordinary fair dice are rolled and the two scores are added together. Work out the probability that the total is a prime number.
- 5.A straight line crosses two parallel lines. One of the angles formed is (2x + 10)°, and the angle alternate to it is 74°. Work out the value of x.
- 6.A rectangular tile measures 4.5 cm by 6 cm. Work out the area of the tile.
- 7.A cylinder has a radius of 3 cm and a height of 10 cm. Using π = 3.14, work out the volume of the cylinder. Give your answer to the nearest whole number of cubic centimetres.
- 8.Three numbers are in the ratio 1:2:3. The three numbers add up to 72. Work out the largest of the three numbers.
- 9.Isla and her brother share £60 in the ratio 1:2. Work out Isla's share.
- 10.A parallelogram has an area of 136 cm² and a base of 17 cm. Work out the perpendicular height of the parallelogram.
- 11.Solve 4x + 3 = 19
- 12.In a school choir the ratio of boys to girls is 3:4. When 6 more boys join the choir, the ratio of boys to girls becomes 1:1. Work out how many girls are in the choir.
- 13.Two classes sat the same maths test, both marked out of 100. Class A had a mean mark of 70 and a range of 30 marks. Class B had a mean mark of 70 and a range of 10 marks. Compare the marks of the two classes.
- 14.A shop recorded the number of books it sold on five days: 100, 40, 70, 20, 60. Work out the range of the numbers of books sold.
- 15.In triangle ABC, angle A is 2x°, angle B is 3x° and angle C is 4x°. Work out the size of angle B.
- 16.A regular hexagon is divided into six identical triangles by joining its centre to each of the six vertices. Work out the size of the angle of one of these triangles at the centre of the hexagon.
- 17.The mean of 5 numbers is 8. Work out the total of the 5 numbers.
- 18.Two fair five-sided dice, numbered 1 to 5, are rolled. Work out the probability that the two scores differ by at least 2.
- 19.In a board game Mia moves forward by the total of two ordinary fair dice. Work out the probability that her total is 7. Give your answer as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 20.Which of these equations is equivalent to 5x − 2 = 3x + 8?
- 21.Solve 3(2x − 1) = 27
- 22.Harry counted the coins he found on each of six days: 5, 7, 8, 9, 11, 30. Write down the outlier.
- 23.Amelia's mean mark over four tests is 29. Her first three marks are 31, 26 and 26. Work out her fourth mark.
- 24.Two angles are complementary. One of them is 35°. Work out the size of the other angle.
- 25.A shop sold seven pairs of shoes in these sizes: 4, 4, 5, 6, 6, 6, 9. Write down the modal size.
What is on this worksheet?
The sheet holds 25 questions drawn from the MathsUK bank — the content areas covered: Ratio, proportion and rates of change, Geometry and measures, Algebra, Statistics, Probability (statements R5, R9, G16, G3, A17, S4, P7). It is pitched at GCSE Foundation and takes about 40 minutes to work through in full. It is built for independent practice, with full answers at the end for self-marking.
How to use the sheet well
- Print it or open it on screen — both work. Printing is A4; the screen view fits phones and tablets.
- Do all 25 questions before checking — about 40 minutes is the guide, but there is no time pressure.
- Check the answers — press “Show answers” or print the answer page separately.
- Redo the questions you got wrong — twice as effective as doing 25 fresh ones.
- “New questions” — builds a fresh sheet on the same statements, so you can practise again without repeats.
Why this sheet helps
MathsUK worksheets use questions graded by difficulty and a fair spread of correct-answer positions (the answer is not always (a)) — so the student really has to think about each question rather than guess a pattern. Every question is tagged to a DfE content statement and checked before it enters the bank. The answers come with a step-by-step explanation, not just a value — so a wrong answer becomes a lesson.
