25 questions on the topics that decide a grade 4: percentages, ratio, area and perimeter, linear equations, averages and probability.
🎯 Grade 4 pass booster
A grade 4 is the standard pass that colleges, apprenticeships and employers ask for, and most students who miss it do not miss it on the hard questions — they miss it by dropping marks across the accessible ones. This sheet gathers twenty-five of those: percentage of an amount and percentage change, sharing in a ratio, area and perimeter of rectangles, triangles and compound shapes, solving a linear equation, reading the mean, median, mode and range from a list or a table, and simple probability. Nothing here is a stretch topic, and all of it is worth marks on every paper, on both tiers. Work through it, mark it honestly, and treat anything you got wrong as a priority over anything further up the specification — a secured mark is worth more than an attempted one.
- 1.Spinner C has 3 equal sections, numbered 2, 3 and 5. Spinner D has 6 equal sections, numbered 1 to 6. Both spinners are spun once, and the two numbers are multiplied together. Work out the probability that the product is a multiple of 5.
- 2.A rectangular bookmark measures 2 cm by 25 cm. Work out the area of the bookmark.
- 3.Two identical ladders lean against the same vertical wall from opposite sides, each making an angle of 58.2° with the ground. The two ladders and the ground form a triangle. Work out the size of the angle between the two ladders at the top, where they meet.
- 4.Two fair four-sided dice, numbered 1 to 4, are rolled and the two scores are added together. Work out the probability that the total is 5.
- 5.A regular hexagon is divided into six identical triangles by joining its centre to each of the six vertices. Work out the size of the angle of one of these triangles at the centre of the hexagon.
- 6.Noah says that y = 3 is the solution of the equation y + 10 = 12. Noah is wrong. Work out the correct value of y.
- 7.The same jumper is sold at two shops. Shop A charges £40 and Shop B charges £50. Write down the price at Shop A as a percentage of the price at Shop B.
- 8.A raised garden bed is a prism whose cross-section is a triangle with a base of 1.2 m and a perpendicular height of 0.8 m. The bed is 3 m long. Work out the volume of soil needed to fill it, in m³.
- 9.A ribbon of length 90 cm is cut into two pieces in the ratio 4:5. Work out the length of the shorter piece.
- 10.Solve 2x + 7 = x + 13
- 11.Harry counted the coins he found on each of six days: 5, 7, 8, 9, 11, 30. Write down the outlier.
- 12.A cuboid-shaped shipping crate has a length of 12 m, a width of 5 m, and a volume of 360 m³. Work out the height of the crate, in metres.
- 13.Two classes sat the same test. The 30 pupils in Class A had a mean mark of 72. The 20 pupils in Class B had a mean mark of 82. Work out the mean mark of all 50 pupils.
- 14.Three numbers are in the ratio 1:2:3. The three numbers add up to 72. Work out the largest of the three numbers.
- 15.Two straight lines cross at a point. Which statement about a pair of vertically opposite angles is always true?
- 16.A charity shop and a school share collection-box money in the ratio 5 : 8. The charity shop receives £47.50. Work out how much the school receives.
- 17.There are 400 students at a school. 25% of them have a brother, 40% have a sister and 15% have both a brother and a sister. Work out how many of the students have neither a brother nor a sister.
- 18.A cylinder has a radius of 3 cm and a height of 10 cm. Using π = 3.14, work out the volume of the cylinder. Give your answer to the nearest whole number of cubic centimetres.
- 19.A textbook is reduced from £60 to £45. Work out the percentage reduction.
- 20.Work out 25% of 200.
- 21.A straight transversal crosses a pair of parallel lines. At one crossing point, the angle between the transversal and a parallel line is 118°. Work out the size of the co-interior (allied) angle at the other crossing point.
- 22.A solid cube has a volume of 8 cm³. Work out the length of one edge of the cube.
- 23.A cylinder has a volume of 942 cm³ and a height of 12 cm. Using π = 3.14, work out the radius of the cylinder.
- 24.A sum of £150 is divided between Ben and Chloe in the ratio 2:3. Work out Chloe's share.
- 25.Two angles are supplementary. One of them is twice the size of the other. Work out the size of the smaller angle.
What is on this worksheet?
The sheet holds 25 questions drawn from the MathsUK bank — the content areas covered: Ratio, proportion and rates of change, Geometry and measures, Algebra, Statistics, Probability (statements R5, R9, G16, G3, A17, S4, P7). It is pitched at GCSE Foundation and takes about 40 minutes to work through in full. It is built for independent practice, with full answers at the end for self-marking.
How to use the sheet well
- Print it or open it on screen — both work. Printing is A4; the screen view fits phones and tablets.
- Do all 25 questions before checking — about 40 minutes is the guide, but there is no time pressure.
- Check the answers — press “Show answers” or print the answer page separately.
- Redo the questions you got wrong — twice as effective as doing 25 fresh ones.
- “New questions” — builds a fresh sheet on the same statements, so you can practise again without repeats.
Why this sheet helps
MathsUK worksheets use questions graded by difficulty and a fair spread of correct-answer positions (the answer is not always (a)) — so the student really has to think about each question rather than guess a pattern. Every question is tagged to a DfE content statement and checked before it enters the bank. The answers come with a step-by-step explanation, not just a value — so a wrong answer becomes a lesson.
