25 questions on the topics that decide a grade 4: percentages, ratio, area and perimeter, linear equations, averages and probability.
🎯 Grade 4 pass booster
A grade 4 is the standard pass that colleges, apprenticeships and employers ask for, and most students who miss it do not miss it on the hard questions — they miss it by dropping marks across the accessible ones. This sheet gathers twenty-five of those: percentage of an amount and percentage change, sharing in a ratio, area and perimeter of rectangles, triangles and compound shapes, solving a linear equation, reading the mean, median, mode and range from a list or a table, and simple probability. Nothing here is a stretch topic, and all of it is worth marks on every paper, on both tiers. Work through it, mark it honestly, and treat anything you got wrong as a priority over anything further up the specification — a secured mark is worth more than an attempted one.
- 1.A fair coin is flipped and a fair five-sided spinner, labelled 1 to 5, is spun. All the outcomes are listed as pairs, such as (H, 3). Work out the probability that the outcome is a tail and an odd number.
- 2.At an animal shelter, the ratio of cats to dogs is 2:5. There are 18 more dogs than cats. Work out the number of cats.
- 3.A taxi company charges a £2.50 booking fee plus £1.80 per mile. A journey costs £15.10 in total. Work out the number of miles travelled.
- 4.A company's turnover this year is £180,000. Last year's turnover was £120,000. Write down this year's turnover as a percentage of last year's turnover.
- 5.A cylinder has a radius of 3 cm and a height of 10 cm. Using π = 3.14, work out the volume of the cylinder.
- 6.A triangular prism has a cross-section that is a triangle with a base of 3.5 cm and a perpendicular height of 4 cm. The prism is 10 cm long. Work out the volume of the prism.
- 7.A fruit punch is made from orange juice, pineapple juice and lemonade in the ratio 5:3:2. A jug holds 3.5 litres of punch in total. Work out the volume of pineapple juice needed.
- 8.Kwame flips a fair coin three times and writes down what it lands on each time. Work out the probability that it lands on heads all three times.
- 9.A regular polygon has 12 sides. Work out the size of one exterior angle of the polygon.
- 10.Spinner A has 4 equal sections, numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4. Spinner B has 3 equal sections, coloured red, red and blue. Both spinners are spun once. Work out the probability of getting an even number on Spinner A and red on Spinner B.
- 11.Three friends share a raffle prize of £360 in the ratio 2:3:4. Work out the share of the friend whose part of the ratio is 3.
- 12.Solve 3x − 5 = 4.
- 13.Solve 5x + 2 = 17.
- 14.A straight line crosses two parallel lines. One of the angles formed is (2x + 10)°, and the angle alternate to it is 74°. Work out the value of x.
- 15.Solve 3x + 14 = 8x − 6
- 16.A metal alloy is made from copper and tin in the ratio 7:3. Work out the mass of tin in 250 g of the alloy.
- 17.A garden flower bed is in the shape of a trapezium. Its two parallel edges are 3.5 m and 6.5 m long, and the perpendicular distance between them is 4 m. Bedding plants cost £2.50 per square metre to cover the bed. Work out the total cost of the bedding plants.
- 18.Solve 2(x + 3) = 10
- 19.A raffle has two independent draws. In the first, a winning ticket is picked at random from 5 red tickets and 3 blue tickets. In the second, a winning number is picked using a fair spinner with 4 equal sections, numbered 1 to 4. Work out the probability that the first winning ticket is blue and the second winning number is greater than 2.
- 20.Grace asked 12 children how many brothers and sisters they have. Her results, in order, were 0, 0, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 6. Work out the median number of brothers and sisters.
- 21.A jug of squash is made by mixing water and syrup in the ratio 6:1. Nia wants to make 8.4 litres of squash. Work out how much syrup she needs, in litres.
- 22.The equation 3(2x − 1) = 4x + 9 is rearranged by expanding the brackets. Which of these is the correctly expanded equation?
- 23.Oliver flips three fair coins at the same time. Work out the probability that exactly two of the three coins land on heads.
- 24.The number of members of a running club increases from 45 to 54. Work out the percentage increase.
- 25.An angle measures 108°. Write down the name given to an angle of this size.
What is on this worksheet?
The sheet holds 25 questions drawn from the MathsUK bank — the content areas covered: Ratio, proportion and rates of change, Geometry and measures, Algebra, Statistics, Probability (statements R5, R9, G16, G3, A17, S4, P7). It is pitched at GCSE Foundation and takes about 40 minutes to work through in full. It is built for independent practice, with full answers at the end for self-marking.
How to use the sheet well
- Print it or open it on screen — both work. Printing is A4; the screen view fits phones and tablets.
- Do all 25 questions before checking — about 40 minutes is the guide, but there is no time pressure.
- Check the answers — press “Show answers” or print the answer page separately.
- Redo the questions you got wrong — twice as effective as doing 25 fresh ones.
- “New questions” — builds a fresh sheet on the same statements, so you can practise again without repeats.
Why this sheet helps
MathsUK worksheets use questions graded by difficulty and a fair spread of correct-answer positions (the answer is not always (a)) — so the student really has to think about each question rather than guess a pattern. Every question is tagged to a DfE content statement and checked before it enters the bank. The answers come with a step-by-step explanation, not just a value — so a wrong answer becomes a lesson.
