18 demanding questions: algebraic proof, functions, vectors, histograms, conditional probability and iteration.
🔺 Higher stretch — grade 8 and 9 topics
The top of a Higher paper is not the same content done faster — it is the statements that only appear at the top, and questions that hide two steps inside one instruction. This sheet gathers eighteen of them: algebraic proof and showing two expressions are equivalent, inverse and composite functions, transformations of graphs, the equation of a circle and its tangent, iteration, vectors used to construct a geometric argument, histograms with unequal class intervals, and conditional probability from a tree or a Venn diagram. It is deliberately hard and deliberately short. If you get half of it out, you are working where grades 8 and 9 are decided — and the worked answers are written to show the step that was actually being tested, not just the arithmetic around it.
- 1.A histogram shows the ages, in years, of 250 members of a running club. The bar for the class 10 ≤ age < 20 has a frequency density of 4.5 members per year, the bar for 20 ≤ age < 35 has a frequency density of 6 members per year, and the bar for 50 ≤ age < 70 has a frequency density of 2.75 members per year. Work out the frequency of the remaining class, 35 ≤ age < 50.
- 2.In a histogram of the heights, h cm, of 90 seedlings, the class 12 ≤ h < 18 contains 36 seedlings. Work out the frequency density for this class.
- 3.A surveyor marks two fixed points A and B, with position vectors OA = a and OB = b (in km) from a base station O. A relay mast P is to be placed on the line AB such that AP : PB = 3 : 2. Express the vector OP in terms of a and b.
- 4.The graph of y = f(x) has a maximum turning point at (−1, 6). Write down the coordinates of the maximum turning point of the graph of y = f(x − 3).
- 5.The point (−4, 3) lies on the circle x² + y² = 25, which has centre (0, 0). Work out the equation of the tangent to the circle at (−4, 3), giving your answer in the form y = mx + c.
- 6.A test for a medical condition is given to 1000 people. 50 of the people have the condition and 950 do not. The test is positive for 45 of the 50 people who have the condition, and it is also positive for 95 of the 950 people who do not have the condition. One of the people whose test is positive is picked at random. Work out the probability that this person has the condition.
- 7.A student uses the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = √(7xₙ + 3) to find an approximate solution of an equation. Work out which equation this iterative formula solves.
- 8.A number machine multiplies its input by 2 and then subtracts 5. Work out the output when the input is 6.
- 9.Which of these equations represents the graph of y = 2ˣ translated by 3 units in the positive y-direction?
- 10.A market stall's cost of hiring n tables is modelled by two formulas: Formula A: C = 3(2n + 5); Formula B: C = 6n + 15, where C is in pounds. A stallholder says the two formulas always give the same cost. Work out the cost given by each formula when n = 4, and use your results to decide whether the stallholder is correct.
- 11.A circle has equation x² + y² = 49. Work out the coordinates of the point(s) on the circle where the tangent is horizontal.
- 12.A gym draws a histogram of the times, t minutes, that its members spend on one machine. The bar for 0 ≤ t < 10 has a frequency density of 1.8 per minute, the bar for 10 ≤ t < 25 has a frequency density of 3.2 per minute, and the bar for 25 ≤ t < 55 has a frequency density of 0.9 per minute. Members who spend 10 minutes or more on the machine pay an extra charge. Work out the number of members who pay the extra charge.
- 13.A factory tests components from a large batch in which 6% are defective. Two components are selected at random, and the batch is large enough that the selections can be treated as independent. Given that at least one of the two components is defective, work out the probability that both are defective.
- 14.A photo printing service has two adverts for its price. Advert A: cost in pounds = 3(2n + 4) for n photos. Advert B: cost in pounds = 6n + 12. A customer says the two adverts always charge the same amount. Is the customer correct?
- 15.The point (3, 6) lies on the circle x² + y² = 45. The tangent to the circle at (3, 6) crosses the x-axis at the point P. Work out the coordinates of P.
- 16.The equation x² − 4x − 1 = 0 can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = √(4xₙ + 1). The starting value is x₀ = 1, so x₁ is the value after the formula has been used once. Work out x₂ correct to 3 decimal places.
- 17.A proof that the product of two consecutive even numbers is always a multiple of 8 begins: Let the two consecutive even numbers be 2n and 2n + 2, so their product is 2n(2n + 2) = 4n(n + 1). Which line correctly completes the proof?
- 18.OABC is a parallelogram, with OA = a and OC = c. M is the midpoint of AB. Express the vector OM in terms of a and c.
What is on this worksheet?
The sheet holds 18 questions drawn from the MathsUK bank — the content areas covered: Algebra, Geometry and measures, Probability, Statistics (statements A6, A7, A13, A16, A20, G25, S3, P9). It is pitched at GCSE Higher and takes about 50 minutes to work through in full. It is built for independent practice, with full answers at the end for self-marking.
How to use the sheet well
- Print it or open it on screen — both work. Printing is A4; the screen view fits phones and tablets.
- Do all 18 questions before checking — about 50 minutes is the guide, but there is no time pressure.
- Check the answers — press “Show answers” or print the answer page separately.
- Redo the questions you got wrong — twice as effective as doing 18 fresh ones.
- “New questions” — builds a fresh sheet on the same statements, so you can practise again without repeats.
Why this sheet helps
MathsUK worksheets use questions graded by difficulty and a fair spread of correct-answer positions (the answer is not always (a)) — so the student really has to think about each question rather than guess a pattern. Every question is tagged to a DfE content statement and checked before it enters the bank. The answers come with a step-by-step explanation, not just a value — so a wrong answer becomes a lesson.
