18 demanding questions: algebraic proof, functions, vectors, histograms, conditional probability and iteration.
🔺 Higher stretch — grade 8 and 9 topics
The top of a Higher paper is not the same content done faster — it is the statements that only appear at the top, and questions that hide two steps inside one instruction. This sheet gathers eighteen of them: algebraic proof and showing two expressions are equivalent, inverse and composite functions, transformations of graphs, the equation of a circle and its tangent, iteration, vectors used to construct a geometric argument, histograms with unequal class intervals, and conditional probability from a tree or a Venn diagram. It is deliberately hard and deliberately short. If you get half of it out, you are working where grades 8 and 9 are decided — and the worked answers are written to show the step that was actually being tested, not just the arithmetic around it.
- 1.The graph of y = cos x is transformed onto the graph of y = cos(x − 90°). State the direction of the translation and which standard graph the image is.y = cos(x)
- 2.The graph of y = f(x) passes through the point (0, 4). Work out the y-coordinate of the point where the graph of y = f(x) − 6 crosses the y-axis.
- 3.The function f(x) = x² for all real values of x has no inverse function, but g(x) = x² for x ≥ 0 does have one. Which statement correctly explains this?y = x²
- 4.The masses, m kg, of 80 sacks of grain are summarised by these cumulative frequencies: m < 10, 6 sacks; m < 20, 22 sacks; m < 30, 58 sacks; m < 40, 74 sacks; m < 50, 80 sacks. Use interpolation to estimate the median mass.
- 5.A ferry company finds that on 20% of days the sea is rough. If the sea is rough, the probability that a crossing is delayed is 0.75. If the sea is calm, the probability that a crossing is delayed is 0.1. Given that a crossing was delayed, work out the probability that the sea was rough that day.
- 6.The equation x² − 7 = 0 has a positive root. Let f(x) = x² − 7. Given that x₁ = 2.6 and x₂ = 2.65, work out which of these is correct.y = x² − 7
- 7.A bus company records the delay, d minutes, of 250 buses: 0 ≤ d < 2, 60 buses; 2 ≤ d < 5, 90 buses; 5 ≤ d < 10, 75 buses; 10 ≤ d < 20, 25 buses. The company refunds the fare whenever a bus is more than 8 minutes late. Estimate the number of refunds it must pay.
- 8.A histogram is drawn for the masses, m grams, of 200 letters. The bar for 0 ≤ m < 50 has a frequency density of 1.2 per gram and the bar for 50 ≤ m < 100 has a frequency density of 1.8 per gram. All the remaining letters lie in the class 100 ≤ m < 200. Work out the frequency density of the bar for 100 ≤ m < 200.
- 9.Which expression is equivalent to 3(x + 4) − 2(x − 1)?
- 10.The point (3, 6) lies on the circle x² + y² = 45. The tangent to the circle at (3, 6) crosses the x-axis at the point P. Work out the coordinates of P.
- 11.The heights, h cm, of 80 plants are grouped like this: 0 ≤ h < 20, 14 plants; 20 ≤ h < 40, 22 plants; 40 ≤ h < 50, 16 plants; 50 ≤ h < 80, 28 plants. Write down the class interval that contains the lower quartile.
- 12.The graph of y = f(x) has x-intercepts at x = −2 and x = 6 and crosses the y-axis at (0, −12). Work out the x-intercepts and the y-intercept of y = −f(x).
- 13.f(x) = x + 2 and g(x) = x². Work out the value of x for which fg(x) = gf(x).y = x + 2
- 14.In a histogram of the distances, d metres, thrown by some athletes, the bar covering 20 ≤ d < 60 has a constant frequency density of 1.8 per metre. Estimate the number of throws of at least 20 metres but less than 35 metres.
- 15.Which line of algebra shows that the sum of two consecutive odd numbers is always a multiple of 4?
- 16.The graph of y = f(x) has a maximum turning point at (−1, 6). Write down the coordinates of the maximum turning point of the graph of y = f(x − 3).
- 17.A rule turns each input x into an output y. The inputs are x = −1, 0, 1, 2 and the matching outputs are y = 5, 3, 1, −1. Work out the rule.
- 18.A number machine multiplies its input by 2 and then subtracts 5. Work out the output when the input is 6.
What is on this worksheet?
The sheet holds 18 questions drawn from the MathsUK bank — the content areas covered: Algebra, Geometry and measures, Probability, Statistics (statements A6, A7, A13, A16, A20, G25, S3, P9). It is pitched at GCSE Higher and takes about 50 minutes to work through in full. It is built for independent practice, with full answers at the end for self-marking.
How to use the sheet well
- Print it or open it on screen — both work. Printing is A4; the screen view fits phones and tablets.
- Do all 18 questions before checking — about 50 minutes is the guide, but there is no time pressure.
- Check the answers — press “Show answers” or print the answer page separately.
- Redo the questions you got wrong — twice as effective as doing 18 fresh ones.
- “New questions” — builds a fresh sheet on the same statements, so you can practise again without repeats.
Why this sheet helps
MathsUK worksheets use questions graded by difficulty and a fair spread of correct-answer positions (the answer is not always (a)) — so the student really has to think about each question rather than guess a pattern. Every question is tagged to a DfE content statement and checked before it enters the bank. The answers come with a step-by-step explanation, not just a value — so a wrong answer becomes a lesson.
