18 demanding questions: algebraic proof, functions, vectors, histograms, conditional probability and iteration.
🔺 Higher stretch — grade 8 and 9 topics
The top of a Higher paper is not the same content done faster — it is the statements that only appear at the top, and questions that hide two steps inside one instruction. This sheet gathers eighteen of them: algebraic proof and showing two expressions are equivalent, inverse and composite functions, transformations of graphs, the equation of a circle and its tangent, iteration, vectors used to construct a geometric argument, histograms with unequal class intervals, and conditional probability from a tree or a Venn diagram. It is deliberately hard and deliberately short. If you get half of it out, you are working where grades 8 and 9 are decided — and the worked answers are written to show the step that was actually being tested, not just the arithmetic around it.
- 1.A drone flies from its base in three stages, each stage measured in metres east and north as a column vector. Stage 1 is the column vector with top number 30 and bottom number 40. Stage 2 is the column vector with top number −10 and bottom number 20. Stage 3 is the column vector with top number 15 and bottom number −5. Work out the column vector that would take the drone in a single straight flight back to its base from where it ends up.
- 2.In a histogram of the times, t minutes, taken by some people to complete a task, the class 15 ≤ t < 30 contains 24 people. Work out the frequency density for this class.
- 3.A bus company records the delay, d minutes, of 250 buses: 0 ≤ d < 2, 60 buses; 2 ≤ d < 5, 90 buses; 5 ≤ d < 10, 75 buses; 10 ≤ d < 20, 25 buses. The company refunds the fare whenever a bus is more than 8 minutes late. Estimate the number of refunds it must pay.
- 4.The graph of y = f(x) has x-intercepts at x = −1 and x = 4. Which statement correctly describes the x-intercepts of y = f(2 − x)?
- 5.A bag contains 3 red counters and 5 blue counters. Three counters are taken out at random, one after another, without being replaced. Work out the probability that all three counters taken out are red.
- 6.The graph of y = x³ − 5x is reflected in the y-axis. Work out the equation of the image.y = x
- 7.A test for a medical condition is given to 1000 people. 50 of the people have the condition and 950 do not. The test is positive for 45 of the 50 people who have the condition, and it is also positive for 95 of the 950 people who do not have the condition. One of the people whose test is positive is picked at random. Work out the probability that this person has the condition.
- 8.The graph of y = f(x) has a minimum turning point at (4, −5). The graph of y = f(x) + a has a minimum turning point whose minimum VALUE is 2. Work out the value of a, and state the coordinates of the minimum turning point of y = f(x) + a.
- 9.A student attempts to prove that the sum of any three consecutive integers is a multiple of 3. Line 1: Let the three consecutive integers be n, n + 1 and n + 2. Line 2: Their sum is n + (n + 1) + (n + 2) = 3n + 2. Line 3: 3n + 2 leaves a remainder of 2 when divided by 3, so it is not a multiple of 3. Line 4: So the sum of three consecutive integers is not always a multiple of 3. Which line contains the FIRST error?
- 10.f(x) = x³ − 5x − 6. Given that f(2.6) = −1.424 and f(2.7) = 0.183, work out what this shows about the equation x³ − 5x − 6 = 0.y = x
- 11.Which expression is equivalent to 0.5(4x + 6) − x?
- 12.In triangle OAB, OA = a and OB = b. P lies on AB such that AP is twice PB. Express the vector OP in terms of a and b.
- 13.The graph of y = f(x) has a maximum turning point at (−1, 6). Write down the coordinates of the maximum turning point of the graph of y = f(x − 3).
- 14.Points A(8, 15) and B(−8, 15) both lie on the circle x² + y² = 289, which has centre (0, 0). Work out the length of the chord AB.
- 15.The graph of y = 2x² + 6x − 1 is translated by the vector (−2, 0). Work out the equation of the image, giving your answer in the form y = 2x² + bx + c.y = 2x² + 6x − 1y = 2x²
- 16.Point A has coordinates (2, 5). Point A is translated to point B using the column vector with top number 6 and bottom number −3. Write down the coordinates of point B.
- 17.A scientist has grouped the lifetimes, in hours, of 300 batteries into classes of unequal width. She wants a diagram in which the number of batteries in a class is given by the area of its bar. Write down the type of diagram she should draw.
- 18.A rule turns each input into an output. An input of 0 gives an output of −1, an input of 1 gives an output of 1, and an input of 2 gives an output of 3. Work out the rule, writing the input as x and the output as y.
What is on this worksheet?
The sheet holds 18 questions drawn from the MathsUK bank — the content areas covered: Algebra, Geometry and measures, Probability, Statistics (statements A6, A7, A13, A16, A20, G25, S3, P9). It is pitched at GCSE Higher and takes about 50 minutes to work through in full. It is built for independent practice, with full answers at the end for self-marking.
How to use the sheet well
- Print it or open it on screen — both work. Printing is A4; the screen view fits phones and tablets.
- Do all 18 questions before checking — about 50 minutes is the guide, but there is no time pressure.
- Check the answers — press “Show answers” or print the answer page separately.
- Redo the questions you got wrong — twice as effective as doing 18 fresh ones.
- “New questions” — builds a fresh sheet on the same statements, so you can practise again without repeats.
Why this sheet helps
MathsUK worksheets use questions graded by difficulty and a fair spread of correct-answer positions (the answer is not always (a)) — so the student really has to think about each question rather than guess a pattern. Every question is tagged to a DfE content statement and checked before it enters the bank. The answers come with a step-by-step explanation, not just a value — so a wrong answer becomes a lesson.
