18 demanding questions: algebraic proof, functions, vectors, histograms, conditional probability and iteration.
🔺 Higher stretch — grade 8 and 9 topics
The top of a Higher paper is not the same content done faster — it is the statements that only appear at the top, and questions that hide two steps inside one instruction. This sheet gathers eighteen of them: algebraic proof and showing two expressions are equivalent, inverse and composite functions, transformations of graphs, the equation of a circle and its tangent, iteration, vectors used to construct a geometric argument, histograms with unequal class intervals, and conditional probability from a tree or a Venn diagram. It is deliberately hard and deliberately short. If you get half of it out, you are working where grades 8 and 9 are decided — and the worked answers are written to show the step that was actually being tested, not just the arithmetic around it.
- 1.A student says 4(2x − 3) is equivalent to 8x − 3. Which statement gives the correct verdict and reason?
- 2.A designer enlarges a drawing of a model car for a poster. She first enlarges the drawing by a scale factor of 1.5, and then enlarges that result by a further scale factor of 2. On the original drawing, the position of a wheel relative to the front bumper is given by the column vector with top number 4 and bottom number −3, in centimetres. What is the corresponding column vector on the poster, in centimetres?
- 3.The heights, h cm, of 80 plants are grouped like this: 0 ≤ h < 20, 14 plants; 20 ≤ h < 40, 22 plants; 40 ≤ h < 50, 16 plants; 50 ≤ h < 80, 28 plants. Write down the class interval that contains the lower quartile.
- 4.Marta is drawing a cumulative frequency diagram for the times, t seconds, of 100 telephone calls. The grouped frequencies are: 0 ≤ t < 10, 7 calls; 10 ≤ t < 20, 19 calls; 20 ≤ t < 30, 34 calls; 30 ≤ t < 40, 40 calls. Write down the coordinates of the point Marta should plot for the class 20 ≤ t < 30.
- 5.A circle has centre (0, 0) and equation x² + y² = 3721. The point (11, 60) lies on the circle. One of these is the gradient of the tangent to the circle at (11, 60). Work out which one.
- 6.The masses, m grams, of 100 apples are grouped like this: 100 ≤ m < 120, 10 apples; 120 ≤ m < 140, 30 apples; 140 ≤ m < 160, 40 apples; 160 ≤ m < 200, 20 apples. Estimate the median mass.
- 7.f(x) = x³ − 3x − 5. Given that f(2.2) = −0.952 and f(2.3) = 0.267, work out what this shows about the equation x³ − 3x − 5 = 0.y = x
- 8.Which of these is an identity?
- 9.The point (6, 8) lies on the circle x² + y² = 100. Work out the gradient of the tangent to the circle at (6, 8).
- 10.A rectangular vegetable plot has an area of 30 m² and its length is 4 m greater than its width, x metres. This gives x² + 4x − 30 = 0, which can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = √(30 − 4xₙ). The starting value is x₀ = 3, so x₁ is the value after the formula has been used once. Work out x₃, and use it to find an estimate for the length of the plot, giving your answer correct to 1 decimal place.
- 11.The graph of y = f(x) has a minimum turning point at (4, −5). The graph of y = f(x) + a has a minimum turning point whose minimum VALUE is 2. Work out the value of a, and state the coordinates of the minimum turning point of y = f(x) + a.
- 12.Which expression is equivalent to 3(2x − 5) + 4x?
- 13.OABC is a parallelogram, with OA = a and OC = c. M is the midpoint of AB. Express the vector OM in terms of a and c.
- 14.The equation x² = 5x − 3 is to be solved using iteration. Work out which of these iterative formulas comes from a correct rearrangement of the equation.
- 15.A rule turns each input x into an output y. The inputs are x = 0, 1, 2, 3 and the outputs are y = 4, 7, 10, 13. Work out the output when x = 5.
- 16.A bag contains 3 red counters and 5 blue counters. Three counters are taken out at random, one after another, without being replaced. Work out the probability that all three counters taken out are red.
- 17.A bus company records the delay, d minutes, of 250 buses: 0 ≤ d < 2, 60 buses; 2 ≤ d < 5, 90 buses; 5 ≤ d < 10, 75 buses; 10 ≤ d < 20, 25 buses. The company refunds the fare whenever a bus is more than 8 minutes late. Estimate the number of refunds it must pay.
- 18.The graph of y = f(x) passes through the point (0, 4). Work out the y-coordinate of the point where the graph of y = f(x) − 6 crosses the y-axis.
What is on this worksheet?
The sheet holds 18 questions drawn from the MathsUK bank — the content areas covered: Algebra, Geometry and measures, Probability, Statistics (statements A6, A7, A13, A16, A20, G25, S3, P9). It is pitched at GCSE Higher and takes about 50 minutes to work through in full. It is built for independent practice, with full answers at the end for self-marking.
How to use the sheet well
- Print it or open it on screen — both work. Printing is A4; the screen view fits phones and tablets.
- Do all 18 questions before checking — about 50 minutes is the guide, but there is no time pressure.
- Check the answers — press “Show answers” or print the answer page separately.
- Redo the questions you got wrong — twice as effective as doing 18 fresh ones.
- “New questions” — builds a fresh sheet on the same statements, so you can practise again without repeats.
Why this sheet helps
MathsUK worksheets use questions graded by difficulty and a fair spread of correct-answer positions (the answer is not always (a)) — so the student really has to think about each question rather than guess a pattern. Every question is tagged to a DfE content statement and checked before it enters the bank. The answers come with a step-by-step explanation, not just a value — so a wrong answer becomes a lesson.
