✏️ Paper 1 non-calculator warm-up — Foundation
Paper 1 is worth exactly as much as each calculator paper, and it is the one most Foundation students practise least. This sheet is a warm-up for it: twenty questions drawn from the number and ratio statements that turn up on the non-calculator paper year after year — column arithmetic with decimals and negatives, adding and subtracting fractions, percentages of amounts, priority of operations, factors and multiples, and estimating by rounding to one significant figure. Do it with a pen and nothing else. Twenty-five minutes is about right, but do not stop early if you need longer; the point is to find out which of these have quietly gone rusty, not to score well. Mark it, then go back to the topic page for whichever one cost you the most.
- 1.Write the ratio 8 : 15 in the form 1 : n.
- 2.Work out the lowest common multiple of 4 and 6.
- 3.A charity raffle sells 240 tickets at £1.85 each. 40% of the money raised is given to a local hospital. Work out how much money the hospital receives.
- 4.The rent on a flat increases by 10% one year and by a further 10% the following year. Work out the overall percentage increase over the two years.
- 5.A laptop priced at £520 is first increased by 15%, and then the new price is decreased by 20%. Work out the final price of the laptop.
- 6.Work out the highest common factor of 12 and 18.
- 7.Write 0.06 as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 8.A quiz has 50 questions. Freya answers 10% of them incorrectly. Work out how many questions she answers incorrectly.
- 9.Work out 50% of 60.
- 10.Write 1/5 as a percentage.
- 11.The price of a games console is reduced by 10%. In a later sale the reduced price is reduced by 10% again. Work out the overall percentage decrease.
- 12.A bag contains 7 red counters and 15 blue counters. Write down the ratio of red counters to blue counters in its simplest form.
- 13.Which statement about the number 51 is correct?
- 14.A box holds 140 pens. 25% of the pens are red. Work out how many of the pens are red.
- 15.Work out 20 − 8 ÷ 2 + 1
- 16.Estimate the value of √45, giving your answer to the nearest whole number.
- 17.Work out an estimate for 113 + 491, by rounding each number to the nearest 100.
- 18.A gym increases its membership price by 1/5. The original price is £60. Work out the new price.
- 19.Oliver drives 95 km at an average speed of 50 km/h. Work out an estimate for the time the journey takes, by rounding the distance to the nearest 100 km.
- 20.Work out an estimate for 79.3 − 24.6, by rounding each number to the nearest whole number.
