✏️ Paper 1 non-calculator warm-up — Foundation
Paper 1 is worth exactly as much as each calculator paper, and it is the one most Foundation students practise least. This sheet is a warm-up for it: twenty questions drawn from the number and ratio statements that turn up on the non-calculator paper year after year — column arithmetic with decimals and negatives, adding and subtracting fractions, percentages of amounts, priority of operations, factors and multiples, and estimating by rounding to one significant figure. Do it with a pen and nothing else. Twenty-five minutes is about right, but do not stop early if you need longer; the point is to find out which of these have quietly gone rusty, not to score well. Mark it, then go back to the topic page for whichever one cost you the most.
- 1.Work out 35% of 180.
- 2.Isla and her brother share £60 in the ratio 1:2. Work out Isla's share.
- 3.A bag contains 7 red counters and 15 blue counters. Write down the ratio of red counters to blue counters in its simplest form.
- 4.Work out (−3) × 4 + 2 × (−5)
- 5.Write 45 minutes : 2 hours as a ratio in its simplest form.
- 6.Work out 10% of 30% of £200.
- 7.A fruit punch is made from orange juice, pineapple juice and lemonade in the ratio 5:3:2. A jug holds 3.5 litres of punch in total. Work out the volume of pineapple juice needed.
- 8.Order these three values from smallest to largest: 3/8, 0.43, 41%.
- 9.A fruit bowl contains 9 apples and 21 oranges. Write down the ratio of apples to oranges in its simplest form.
- 10.Which of these ratios is equivalent to 6 : 10 : 14?
- 11.£120 is shared between three cousins in the ratio 3:4:5. Work out the largest share.
- 12.An amount of money is shared in the ratio 1:2:3. The largest share is £90 more than the smallest share. Work out the total amount that was shared.
- 13.Write 0.35 as a fraction in its lowest terms.
- 14.Work out the lowest common multiple of 9 and 15.
- 15.Work out (−6) + (−4) × 3
- 16.Is 120 divisible by 5? Give a reason for your answer.
- 17.A rectangular garden has its length and width in the ratio 5:3. Given that the perimeter of the garden is 64 m, work out the width of the garden.
- 18.A rectangular field measures 19.6 m by 48.3 m. Work out an estimate for the area of the field, by rounding each length to 1 significant figure.
- 19.A pack contains 20 stickers. Noah gives 1/5 of the pack to his sister. Work out how many stickers he gives away.
- 20.Work out (5 + 2) × 3²
