✏️ Paper 1 non-calculator warm-up — Foundation
Paper 1 is worth exactly as much as each calculator paper, and it is the one most Foundation students practise least. This sheet is a warm-up for it: twenty questions drawn from the number and ratio statements that turn up on the non-calculator paper year after year — column arithmetic with decimals and negatives, adding and subtracting fractions, percentages of amounts, priority of operations, factors and multiples, and estimating by rounding to one significant figure. Do it with a pen and nothing else. Twenty-five minutes is about right, but do not stop early if you need longer; the point is to find out which of these have quietly gone rusty, not to score well. Mark it, then go back to the topic page for whichever one cost you the most.
- 1.Freya buys three items whose prices are in the ratio 2:3:5. Altogether she pays £400. Work out the price of the most expensive item.
- 2.Write 0.325 as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 3.Work out the difference between 45% of 70 and 35% of 80.
- 4.Work out 3 + 4 × (−2).
- 5.A rectangular garden has its length and width in the ratio 5:3. Given that the perimeter of the garden is 64 m, work out the width of the garden.
- 6.Work out an estimate for 6.4 × 3.9, by rounding each number to the nearest whole number.
- 7.Write the ratio 5 : 8 in the form 1 : n.
- 8.Two investors put money into a business in the ratio 3:5. The first investor puts in £1,200. Work out the total amount invested by both investors.
- 9.A charity shop buys a coat for £24 and sells it for a profit that is 3/8 of the buying price. Work out the selling price.
- 10.Work out the value of √(16 + 9)
- 11.Work out 3 1/5 + 1 2/3. Give your answer as a mixed number in its simplest form.
- 12.A quiz has 50 questions. Freya answers 10% of them incorrectly. Work out how many questions she answers incorrectly.
- 13.Write 0.35 as a fraction in its lowest terms.
- 14.A recipe uses flour, sugar and butter in the ratio 8 : 3 : 5. Write the ratio of flour to the rest of the mixture (sugar and butter combined) in its simplest form.
- 15.Order these three values from smallest to largest: 3/8, 0.43, 41%.
- 16.A carpenter has a plank of wood 4.8 m long. She cuts off 3 pieces, each 0.9 m long, to make shelves. Work out the length of wood remaining.
- 17.Work out an estimate for 79.3 − 24.6, by rounding each number to the nearest whole number.
- 18.Work out (−3) × 4 + 2 × (−5)
- 19.A recipe for one cake needs 2/3 of a cup of sugar. Priya has 3 1/2 cups of sugar. Work out how many complete cakes she can make.
- 20.Three friends share a raffle prize of £360 in the ratio 2:3:4. Work out the share of the friend whose part of the ratio is 3.
