✏️ Paper 1 non-calculator warm-up — Foundation
Paper 1 is worth exactly as much as each calculator paper, and it is the one most Foundation students practise least. This sheet is a warm-up for it: twenty questions drawn from the number and ratio statements that turn up on the non-calculator paper year after year — column arithmetic with decimals and negatives, adding and subtracting fractions, percentages of amounts, priority of operations, factors and multiples, and estimating by rounding to one significant figure. Do it with a pen and nothing else. Twenty-five minutes is about right, but do not stop early if you need longer; the point is to find out which of these have quietly gone rusty, not to score well. Mark it, then go back to the topic page for whichever one cost you the most.
- 1.A textbook is reduced from £60 to £45. Work out the percentage reduction.
- 2.Meera says that 0.7 ÷ 0.1 = 0.07. Work out the correct value of 0.7 ÷ 0.1.
- 3.In a class, 1/3 of the pupils are girls. There are 12 girls in the class. Work out how many pupils are in the class.
- 4.Which statement about the number 91 is correct?
- 5.At a bus station one bus leaves every 6 minutes and another leaves every 9 minutes. The two buses leave together at the start of the day. Work out how long it is until they next leave together.
- 6.Simplify the ratio 12 : 18 : 30 to its simplest form.
- 7.A ribbon of length 90 cm is cut into two pieces in the ratio 4:5. Work out the length of the shorter piece.
- 8.Which of these ratios is equivalent to 2:3?
- 9.Amelia has 49 boxes of apples with 21 apples in each box. Work out an estimate for the total number of apples, by rounding each number to 1 significant figure.
- 10.Work out 3/8 of 96.
- 11.Work out (−2)³ + (−3)² − (−4)
- 12.A gym increases its membership price by 1/5. The original price is £60. Work out the new price.
- 13.Work out −4.5 + 2.8.
- 14.Write 350 ml : 1.4 l as a ratio in its simplest form.
- 15.A sponsored walk raised £350 for charity. 20% of the money raised is spent on equipment. Work out how much is spent on equipment.
- 16.Work out an estimate for 6.4 × 3.9, by rounding each number to the nearest whole number.
- 17.In the number 3.472, work out the value of the digit 7.
- 18.A country's population is 8,340,000, and it is estimated that 1,950,000 of them live in the capital city. By rounding each number to 1 significant figure, work out an estimate for the number of people who do not live in the capital city.
- 19.At midday the temperature in the Lake District was 3 °C. By midnight it had fallen to −6 °C. Work out the fall in temperature.
- 20.Write 1/5 as a percentage.
