✏️ Paper 1 non-calculator warm-up — Foundation
Paper 1 is worth exactly as much as each calculator paper, and it is the one most Foundation students practise least. This sheet is a warm-up for it: twenty questions drawn from the number and ratio statements that turn up on the non-calculator paper year after year — column arithmetic with decimals and negatives, adding and subtracting fractions, percentages of amounts, priority of operations, factors and multiples, and estimating by rounding to one significant figure. Do it with a pen and nothing else. Twenty-five minutes is about right, but do not stop early if you need longer; the point is to find out which of these have quietly gone rusty, not to score well. Mark it, then go back to the topic page for whichever one cost you the most.
- 1.Work out the highest common factor of 12 and 18.
- 2.Write 0.45 as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 3.Work out 20 − 8 ÷ 2 + 1
- 4.The price of a cycling helmet rises from £80 to £116. Work out the percentage increase.
- 5.The price of a jacket increases by 50% and then decreases by 50%. Describe the overall change from the original price.
- 6.Write the mixed number 2 1/4 as an improper fraction.
- 7.A number, n, is a multiple of both 6 and 9. Work out the smallest possible value of n that is greater than 20.
- 8.The angles of a triangle are in the ratio 2:3:4. Work out the size of the smallest angle.
- 9.In a science lesson Priya has 10 litres of a solution that is 30% salt. She adds water to make a solution that is 20% salt. Work out how many litres of water she adds.
- 10.Work out 5 + 3 × (9 − 6)
- 11.A number is multiplied by 4, then 8 is added, giving the result 40. Work out the number.
- 12.Oliver uses his calculator to work out 25% of 80 and writes down 320. Without using a calculator, work out the correct value of 25% of 80.
- 13.Two lighthouses flash at the start of the same minute. The first lighthouse flashes every 8 minutes and the second flashes every 12 minutes. Work out how many minutes it will be until they next flash together.
- 14.Grace works out 7 × 99 by writing 99 as 100 − 1. Use her method to work out 7 × 99.
- 15.Priya has 24 red beads and 36 blue beads. She makes identical bracelets, using every bead and with none left over. Work out the greatest number of bracelets she can make.
- 16.Work out 15% of £40, using 10% and 5%.
- 17.Work out the lowest common multiple of 4 and 6.
- 18.Write 2 m : 150 cm : 50 cm as a ratio of whole numbers in its simplest form.
- 19.Oliver drives 95 km at an average speed of 50 km/h. Work out an estimate for the time the journey takes, by rounding the distance to the nearest 100 km.
- 20.A jug holds 3 1/3 litres of juice. Each glass holds 2/3 of a litre. Work out how many glasses can be filled from the jug.
