✏️ Paper 1 non-calculator warm-up — Foundation
Paper 1 is worth exactly as much as each calculator paper, and it is the one most Foundation students practise least. This sheet is a warm-up for it: twenty questions drawn from the number and ratio statements that turn up on the non-calculator paper year after year — column arithmetic with decimals and negatives, adding and subtracting fractions, percentages of amounts, priority of operations, factors and multiples, and estimating by rounding to one significant figure. Do it with a pen and nothing else. Twenty-five minutes is about right, but do not stop early if you need longer; the point is to find out which of these have quietly gone rusty, not to score well. Mark it, then go back to the topic page for whichever one cost you the most.
- 1.Work out 35% of 180.
- 2.Write the ratio 0.75 : 2 as a ratio of whole numbers in its simplest form.
- 3.The price of a games console is reduced by 10%. In a later sale the reduced price is reduced by 10% again. Work out the overall percentage decrease.
- 4.A jumper costs £45 at Shop A, where it is reduced by 20%. The same jumper costs £34 at Shop B, where a further 10% reduction is then applied. Work out the difference between the two reduced prices.
- 5.A sponsored walk is 36 km long. Aisha has completed 8/12 of the walk. Work out how far she has walked.
- 6.Write these three numbers in order of size, starting with the smallest: 0.7, 3/4, 0.72
- 7.Work out the value of √(16 + 9)
- 8.2/3 of an amount of money is £30. Work out the amount.
- 9.A recipe uses 0.625 kg of flour. Write this mass as a fraction of a kilogram, in its simplest form.
- 10.The angles of a triangle are in the ratio 2:3:4. Work out the size of the smallest angle.
- 11.Work out an estimate for 312 × 19, by rounding each number to 1 significant figure.
- 12.Write '3.2 million' as a number in figures.
- 13.Amelia has 49 boxes of apples with 21 apples in each box. Work out an estimate for the total number of apples, by rounding each number to 1 significant figure.
- 14.Work out 3 × (−2)² − 5
- 15.A washing machine costs £320 before VAT. VAT is charged at 20%. Work out the total price including VAT.
- 16.Write the ratio 4x : 6x in its simplest form, where x is a positive number.
- 17.The rent on a flat increases by 10% one year and by a further 10% the following year. Work out the overall percentage increase over the two years.
- 18.The price of a share falls by 10% on Monday and then rises by 10% on Tuesday. Work out the overall percentage change from Monday's starting price.
- 19.The price of a jacket increases by 50% and then decreases by 50%. Describe the overall change from the original price.
- 20.A school orders 187 packed lunches for a trip. Each packed lunch costs £4.85. The school has £900 to spend. By rounding each number to 1 significant figure, work out an estimate for the total cost and decide whether £900 is enough.
