✏️ Paper 1 non-calculator warm-up — Foundation
Paper 1 is worth exactly as much as each calculator paper, and it is the one most Foundation students practise least. This sheet is a warm-up for it: twenty questions drawn from the number and ratio statements that turn up on the non-calculator paper year after year — column arithmetic with decimals and negatives, adding and subtracting fractions, percentages of amounts, priority of operations, factors and multiples, and estimating by rounding to one significant figure. Do it with a pen and nothing else. Twenty-five minutes is about right, but do not stop early if you need longer; the point is to find out which of these have quietly gone rusty, not to score well. Mark it, then go back to the topic page for whichever one cost you the most.
- 1.Work out 3 × (−2)² − 5
- 2.Work out how many factors 100 has.
- 3.Work out (5 + 2) × 3²
- 4.Work out 1/2 of 1/4 of 80.
- 5.Write the mixed number 2 1/4 as an improper fraction.
- 6.Write 400 g : 1.5 kg as a ratio in its simplest form.
- 7.A jug holds 3 litres of a drink that is 60% fruit juice. 1 litre of water is added to the jug. Work out the percentage of the new mixture that is fruit juice.
- 8.Work out −6 × (−3).
- 9.The number 72 can be written as 2³ × 3², and the number 108 can be written as 2² × 3³. Work out the highest common factor of 72 and 108.
- 10.In a test, Amelia answered 18 of the 24 questions correctly. Work out the percentage of the questions she answered correctly.
- 11.Work out the highest common factor of 15 and 25.
- 12.In a science lesson Priya has 10 litres of a solution that is 30% salt. She adds water to make a solution that is 20% salt. Work out how many litres of water she adds.
- 13.A shade of paint is made by mixing blue paint and white paint. To make 5 litres of the shade, 2 litres of blue paint is used and the rest is white paint. Write the ratio of blue paint to white paint in its simplest form.
- 14.Write the ratio 3/4 : 1/2 as a ratio of whole numbers in its simplest form.
- 15.Grace works out 7 × 99 by writing 99 as 100 − 1. Use her method to work out 7 × 99.
- 16.Write 350 ml : 1.4 l as a ratio in its simplest form.
- 17.Work out an estimate for 113 + 491, by rounding each number to the nearest 100.
- 18.A country's population is 8,340,000, and it is estimated that 1,950,000 of them live in the capital city. By rounding each number to 1 significant figure, work out an estimate for the number of people who do not live in the capital city.
- 19.Work out an estimate for 37 × 84, by rounding each number to 1 significant figure.
- 20.Write these three numbers in order of size, starting with the smallest: 0.7, 3/4, 0.72
