✏️ Paper 1 non-calculator warm-up — Foundation
Paper 1 is worth exactly as much as each calculator paper, and it is the one most Foundation students practise least. This sheet is a warm-up for it: twenty questions drawn from the number and ratio statements that turn up on the non-calculator paper year after year — column arithmetic with decimals and negatives, adding and subtracting fractions, percentages of amounts, priority of operations, factors and multiples, and estimating by rounding to one significant figure. Do it with a pen and nothing else. Twenty-five minutes is about right, but do not stop early if you need longer; the point is to find out which of these have quietly gone rusty, not to score well. Mark it, then go back to the topic page for whichever one cost you the most.
- 1.After a price increase of 10%, a laptop costs £330. Work out the original price.
- 2.Work out (−3) × 4 + 10
- 3.Work out 2 3/4 − 1 5/6. Give your answer as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 4.A rectangular patio measures 90 cm by 120 cm. Ben wants to cover it exactly with identical square tiles, as large as possible, with no tiles cut. Work out the side length of the largest square tile he can use.
- 5.Work out the lowest common multiple of 4 and 6.
- 6.2.4 kg of cheese costs £36. Work out the cost of 1.5 kg of the same cheese.
- 7.A roll of ribbon is 8.4 m long. Ribbon is cut into pieces that are each 0.6 m long. Work out how many complete pieces can be cut from the roll.
- 8.Write 2 m : 150 cm : 50 cm as a ratio of whole numbers in its simplest form.
- 9.A cycle route is 350 m long. A footpath runs alongside it for 3/7 of that length. Work out the length of the footpath.
- 10.A restaurant adds a service charge of 15% to a bill of £120. Work out the service charge.
- 11.Order these three values from smallest to largest: 3/8, 0.43, 41%.
- 12.Write the ratio 4x : 6x in its simplest form, where x is a positive number.
- 13.Is 120 divisible by 5? Give a reason for your answer.
- 14.Work out the difference between 45% of 70 and 35% of 80.
- 15.Work out 3 + 4 × (−2).
- 16.A jug of squash is made by mixing water and syrup in the ratio 6:1. Nia wants to make 8.4 litres of squash. Work out how much syrup she needs, in litres.
- 17.Jack buys 3 books, each costing £4.25, and pays with a £20 note. Work out how much change he receives.
- 18.Divide 84 in the ratio 3:4. Work out the smaller share.
- 19.Work out an estimate for 6.8 × 41, by rounding each number to 1 significant figure.
- 20.A bag contains 7 red counters and 15 blue counters. Write down the ratio of red counters to blue counters in its simplest form.
