✏️ Paper 1 non-calculator warm-up — Foundation
Paper 1 is worth exactly as much as each calculator paper, and it is the one most Foundation students practise least. This sheet is a warm-up for it: twenty questions drawn from the number and ratio statements that turn up on the non-calculator paper year after year — column arithmetic with decimals and negatives, adding and subtracting fractions, percentages of amounts, priority of operations, factors and multiples, and estimating by rounding to one significant figure. Do it with a pen and nothing else. Twenty-five minutes is about right, but do not stop early if you need longer; the point is to find out which of these have quietly gone rusty, not to score well. Mark it, then go back to the topic page for whichever one cost you the most.
- 1.Jack buys 3 books, each costing £4.25, and pays with a £20 note. Work out how much change he receives.
- 2.Write 0.25 as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 3.A plank of wood is 5 1/4 m long. Pieces of length 3/4 m are cut from it. Work out how many complete pieces of 3/4 m can be cut from the plank.
- 4.A jumper costs £45 at Shop A, where it is reduced by 20%. The same jumper costs £34 at Shop B, where a further 10% reduction is then applied. Work out the difference between the two reduced prices.
- 5.A bag contains 7 red counters and 15 blue counters. Write down the ratio of red counters to blue counters in its simplest form.
- 6.At a youth club the ratio of juniors to seniors is 3:5. There are 40 members altogether. Work out how many seniors there are.
- 7.Write down the decimal that is equal to 3/5.
- 8.Write 250 g : 2 kg as a ratio in its simplest form.
- 9.Work out ((−3) + 5) × (−4) − (−6) ÷ 2
- 10.Write 0.875 as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 11.Three numbers are in the ratio 1:2:3. The three numbers add up to 72. Work out the largest of the three numbers.
- 12.Freya types 4² + 3² into her calculator and writes down 49. Work out the correct value of 4² + 3².
- 13.A laptop costs £720. A carrying case for it costs 1/9 of the price of the laptop. Work out the cost of the carrying case.
- 14.Work out −4.5 + 2.8.
- 15.A number is divided by 5, then 6 is subtracted, giving the result −1. Work out the number.
- 16.A fruit punch is made from orange juice, pineapple juice and lemonade in the ratio 5:3:2. A jug holds 3.5 litres of punch in total. Work out the volume of pineapple juice needed.
- 17.Work out (−3) × 4 + 2 × (−5)
- 18.Work out 4368 ÷ 12.
- 19.Work out an estimate for 89 + 52, by rounding each number to the nearest 10.
- 20.The highest common factor of two numbers is 4 and their lowest common multiple is 60. One of the numbers is 20. Work out the other number.
