✏️ Paper 1 non-calculator warm-up — Foundation
Paper 1 is worth exactly as much as each calculator paper, and it is the one most Foundation students practise least. This sheet is a warm-up for it: twenty questions drawn from the number and ratio statements that turn up on the non-calculator paper year after year — column arithmetic with decimals and negatives, adding and subtracting fractions, percentages of amounts, priority of operations, factors and multiples, and estimating by rounding to one significant figure. Do it with a pen and nothing else. Twenty-five minutes is about right, but do not stop early if you need longer; the point is to find out which of these have quietly gone rusty, not to score well. Mark it, then go back to the topic page for whichever one cost you the most.
- 1.Three friends share a raffle prize of £360 in the ratio 2:3:4. Work out the share of the friend whose part of the ratio is 3.
- 2.A pack contains 20 stickers. Noah gives 1/5 of the pack to his sister. Work out how many stickers he gives away.
- 3.In a class, 1/3 of the pupils are girls. There are 12 girls in the class. Work out how many pupils are in the class.
- 4.Write 350 ml : 1.4 l as a ratio in its simplest form.
- 5.Write 0.06 as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 6.A sofa costs £800. Its price is increased by 25%. Work out the new price of the sofa.
- 7.Which of these ratios is equivalent to 5 : 4?
- 8.Write the ratio 3/4 : 1/2 as a ratio of whole numbers in its simplest form.
- 9.Which of these ratios is already written in its simplest form?
- 10.3/5 of the students in a year group walk to school. 90 students walk to school. Work out the total number of students in the year group.
- 11.Work out 36 ÷ (2 × 3)
- 12.Work out an estimate for 79.3 − 24.6, by rounding each number to the nearest whole number.
- 13.A ribbon of length 90 cm is cut into two pieces in the ratio 4:5. Work out the length of the shorter piece.
- 14.The number 24 can be written as 2³ × 3, and the number 60 can be written as 2² × 3 × 5. Work out the lowest common multiple of 24 and 60.
- 15.Work out the lowest common multiple of 4 and 6.
- 16.A laptop costs £720. A carrying case for it costs 1/9 of the price of the laptop. Work out the cost of the carrying case.
- 17.A charity shop buys a coat for £24 and sells it for a profit that is 3/8 of the buying price. Work out the selling price.
- 18.Write the ratio 27 : 45 in its simplest form.
- 19.Write the ratio 20 : 30 in its simplest form.
- 20.Divide 84 in the ratio 3:4. Work out the smaller share.
