✏️ Paper 1 non-calculator warm-up — Foundation
Paper 1 is worth exactly as much as each calculator paper, and it is the one most Foundation students practise least. This sheet is a warm-up for it: twenty questions drawn from the number and ratio statements that turn up on the non-calculator paper year after year — column arithmetic with decimals and negatives, adding and subtracting fractions, percentages of amounts, priority of operations, factors and multiples, and estimating by rounding to one significant figure. Do it with a pen and nothing else. Twenty-five minutes is about right, but do not stop early if you need longer; the point is to find out which of these have quietly gone rusty, not to score well. Mark it, then go back to the topic page for whichever one cost you the most.
- 1.Work out an estimate for 79.3 − 24.6, by rounding each number to the nearest whole number.
- 2.Work out an estimate for 37 × 84, by rounding each number to 1 significant figure.
- 3.£120 is shared between three cousins in the ratio 3:4:5. Work out the largest share.
- 4.Work out 20 − 8 ÷ 2 + 1
- 5.Work out the lowest common multiple of 9 and 15.
- 6.Write 0.25 as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 7.A water tank holds 80 litres when full. It currently contains 60 litres. Work out what fraction of the tank is empty.
- 8.Write the ratio 8 : 15 in the form 1 : n.
- 9.A laptop costs £720. A carrying case for it costs 1/9 of the price of the laptop. Work out the cost of the carrying case.
- 10.Priya adds 3.6 and 0.45 on paper and writes down 3.65 as her answer. Work out the correct value of 3.6 + 0.45.
- 11.A necklace is made using gold beads and silver beads in the ratio 7:3. There are 40 more gold beads than silver beads. Work out the total number of beads in the necklace.
- 12.The number 72 can be written as 2³ × 3², and the number 108 can be written as 2² × 3³. Work out the highest common factor of 72 and 108.
- 13.A gardener has 42 tulip bulbs and 56 daffodil bulbs. She plants them in rows, with every row containing the same number of tulip bulbs and the same number of daffodil bulbs, and no bulbs left over. Work out the greatest number of rows she can plant.
- 14.A recipe uses flour, sugar and butter in the ratio 8 : 3 : 5. Write the ratio of flour to the rest of the mixture (sugar and butter combined) in its simplest form.
- 15.Work out the reciprocal of (2 + 3)
- 16.A gardener mixes 300 ml of plant feed concentrate with 1.2 litres of water to make a spray. Write the ratio of concentrate to water in its simplest form.
- 17.A cycle route is 350 m long. A footpath runs alongside it for 3/7 of that length. Work out the length of the footpath.
- 18.Which of these ratios is equivalent to 5 : 4?
- 19.Write 0.25 as a percentage.
- 20.Work out 35% of 180.
