⏱️ Ten-minute starters — Foundation
Twelve short questions, two from each of the six content areas: number, algebra, ratio, geometry, probability and statistics. Nothing here needs more than a minute, and nothing needs a calculator. It is built as a lesson starter — print it, hand it out, take ten minutes, mark it together — and it works just as well as a daily warm-up at home in the fortnight before a mock. The value is in the spread rather than the depth: a student who has spent a week on algebra can find out in ten minutes what a week away from statistics has cost. Generate a new sheet whenever you want a fresh twelve on the same pattern.
- 1.In triangle ABC the angle at A is 90° and BC = 10 cm. For the angle at B, sin B = 3/5. Work out the length of AC.
- 2.A ribbon of length 90 cm is cut into two pieces in the ratio 4:5. Work out the length of the shorter piece.
- 3.A photography studio offers 4 backdrops and 3 outfits for a portrait session. The plain grey backdrop, one of the 4 backdrops, cannot be used with the formal suit outfit, one of the 3 outfits. Work out how many different backdrop-and-outfit combinations are possible.
- 4.A vertical line passes through the point (4, 7). Write down the equation of this line.
- 5.A tent is shaped like a triangular prism: two triangular end faces and three rectangular faces. One of the rectangular faces lies flat on the ground as the groundsheet. How many of the tent's faces are above the ground, not touching the ground?
- 6.120 members of a sports club were asked whether they play football or netball; each member plays exactly one of the two sports. 70 of the members are male. 45 of the male members play football. 38 of the female members play netball. Work out how many female members play football.
- 7.A circular coaster has a radius of 4 cm. Work out the circumference of the coaster. Give your answer in terms of π.
- 8.Grace says that 2(x + 1) and 2x + 2 always have the same value. Work out the value of both expressions when x = 3.
- 9.A quadratic curve has a root at x = −2 and its turning point has x-coordinate 3. Work out the curve's other root, using the symmetry of the graph.
- 10.In kite WXYZ, WX = WZ and XY = ZY (so at each of X and Z, one side from each of the two unequal pairs meets). Angle X = 100°. Work out angle Z.
- 11.A bag contains 5 red counters and 3 blue counters. A counter is taken at random, its colour is noted, and it is put back in the bag before a second counter is taken at random. Work out the probability that both counters are the same colour.
- 12.In a fruit bowl, the number of bananas is 3/4 of the number of apples. There are 16 apples in the bowl. Write the number of apples as a fraction of the number of bananas. Give your answer in its simplest form.

- (b) 6 cm — Method: the right angle is at A, so BC is the hypotenuse and AC is the side opposite the angle at B; sin B = opposite ÷ hypotenuse therefore gives AC ÷ BC = 3/5. Working: AC ÷ 10 = 3/5, so AC = 10 × 3 ÷ 5 = 6. Answer: 6 cm. The distractors: 8 cm is AB, the side next to the angle at B, which is what cos B = 4/5 produces — the right method used on the wrong side; 3 cm comes from reading the 3 in the ratio as a length and never scaling it up to the 10 cm hypotenuse; 30 cm comes from multiplying by 3 and forgetting to divide by 5.
- (c) 40 cm — Method: split the total length into the number of parts shown by the ratio, then find the value of the shorter share. Working: the ratio 4:5 has 4 + 5 = 9 parts, so one part is 90 ÷ 9 = 10 cm, and the shorter piece is 4 × 10 = 40 cm. So the shorter piece is 40 cm. Distractor 50 cm is the length of the LONGER piece, not the shorter one. Distractor 45 cm comes from splitting the ribbon into two equal halves, ignoring the ratio. Distractor 10 cm is the value of one part, found correctly but never multiplied by 4.
- (c) 11 — Method: work out the total number of combinations as if there were no restriction, then subtract the one combination that is not allowed. Working: without any restriction there are 4 backdrops × 3 outfits = 12 combinations. The grey backdrop with the formal suit is not allowed, removing 1 combination: 12 − 1 = 11. Answer: 11. 12 comes from forgetting to remove the combination that is not allowed. 8 comes from removing the entire formal suit outfit from the count instead of just the one combination with the grey backdrop. 10 comes from removing two combinations instead of just the one that is not allowed.
- (b) x = 4 — Method: every point on a vertical line has the same x-coordinate, so its equation sets x equal to a number, and that number is the x-coordinate of any point known to be on the line. Working: the line is vertical and passes through (4, 7), whose x-coordinate is 4, so every point on the line has x-coordinate 4 and the equation is x = 4. Answer: x = 4. The distractors: y = 7 is the horizontal line through the same point, obtained by fixing the y-coordinate instead of the x-coordinate; x = 7 uses the right form but takes the y-coordinate of the point rather than its x-coordinate; y = 4x treats the 4 as a gradient and gives a sloping line through the origin, which does not pass through (4, 7) at all.
- (b) 4 — A triangular prism has 5 faces in total: 2 triangular ends and 3 rectangular faces. One rectangular face is the groundsheet, lying on the ground, so the other 5 − 1 = 4 faces are above the ground. A candidate who forgets one of the triangular ends when counting the remaining faces answers 3. A candidate who forgets to subtract the groundsheet at all answers 5. A candidate who only counts the two sloped rectangular faces, forgetting the two triangular ends, answers 2. The number of faces above the ground is 4.
- (d) 12 — There are 120 − 70 = 50 female members. 38 of them play netball, so the rest play football: 50 − 38 = 12. Writing 45 is wrong because that is the number of MALE members who play football, not female. Writing 38 again is wrong because that is the female netball total, not the female football total — the question needs the total minus 38, not 38 itself. Writing 25 is wrong because that comes from the male branch (70 − 45 = 25 male netball players), not the female branch. 12 female members play football.
- (a) 8π cm — Circumference = 2πr. Substitute r = 4: circumference = 2 × π × 4 = 8π cm. Using r in place of 2r (halving the formula) gives 4π cm. Using the area formula πr² in place of the circumference formula gives π × 4² = 16π cm. Multiplying 2 × 4 without including π at all gives 8 cm.
- (c) 8 — Method: substitute x = 3 into each expression in turn, working out the bracket first in the expression that has one and the multiplication first in the expression that does not. Working: 2(x + 1) gives 2 × (3 + 1) = 2 × 4 = 8, and 2x + 2 gives 2 × 3 + 2 = 6 + 2 = 8, so both expressions take the value 8, as Grace claims. Answer: 8. The distractors: 7 comes from multiplying only the x inside the bracket and then adding the 1, giving 2 × 3 + 1; 10 comes from reading 2x + 2 as 2(x + 2) and working out 2 × 5; 6 comes from substituting into 2x and stopping before the 2 is added.
- (c) x = 8 — The turning point lies exactly halfway between the two roots. If the other root is r, the midpoint of −2 and r must be 3, so (−2 + r) ÷ 2 = 3, giving r = 8. Choosing x = 5 comes from adding 2 and 3 rather than using the midpoint relationship correctly. Choosing x = 1 comes from subtracting 2 from 3 instead of reflecting −2 across the turning point. Choosing x = −8 finds the right distance but then reflects in the y-axis instead of in the line of symmetry x = 3, so the sign of the answer is flipped.
- (a) 100° — In a kite, the pair of angles between the unequal sides are equal to each other. Angle X and angle Z are both between one side from the WX/WZ pair and one side from the XY/ZY pair, so angle Z = angle X = 100°.
- (a) 17/32 — Because the counter is replaced, each pick is independent with P(red) = 5/8 and P(blue) = 3/8 every time. Both red has probability 5/8 × 5/8 = 25/64, and both blue has probability 3/8 × 3/8 = 9/64. 'Same colour' means either of these, so add them: 25/64 + 9/64 = 34/64 = 17/32. Giving 25/64 finds only the probability of both counters being red, leaving out both counters being blue, which also counts as the same colour. Giving 15/64 finds the probability of one red and one blue counter in just one of the two possible orders — the opposite of what was asked, and only half of it. Giving 13/28 works out the probabilities as if the counter had NOT been replaced, using 5/8 × 4/7 and 3/8 × 2/7, even though the question states it was put back.
- (b) 4/3 — Work out the number of bananas: 3/4 of 16 = 12. Form the fraction 16/12 (apples over bananas); both numbers share a factor of 4, so 16 ÷ 4 = 4 and 12 ÷ 4 = 3, giving 4/3. 3/4 comes from giving the fraction that was already stated in the question (bananas as a fraction of apples), instead of inverting it. 4/1 comes from reading '3/4 of the apples' as 'the apples reduced by 3/4', giving only 4 bananas, then 16/4 = 4. 4/7 comes from comparing the apples with the total number of pieces of fruit (16/28), instead of with the bananas alone.
