12 short questions across all six content areas, designed as a lesson starter or a daily warm-up.
⏱️ Ten-minute starters — Foundation
Twelve short questions, two from each of the six content areas: number, algebra, ratio, geometry, probability and statistics. Nothing here needs more than a minute, and nothing needs a calculator. It is built as a lesson starter — print it, hand it out, take ten minutes, mark it together — and it works just as well as a daily warm-up at home in the fortnight before a mock. The value is in the spread rather than the depth: a student who has spent a week on algebra can find out in ten minutes what a week away from statistics has cost. Generate a new sheet whenever you want a fresh twelve on the same pattern.
- 1.The population of a village is 1200. It is predicted to grow by 5% next year. Work out the predicted population after 1 year, to the nearest whole number.
- 2.In triangle ABC and triangle DEF, the angle at A and the angle at D are both 40°, and the angle at B and the angle at E are both 70°. No side lengths are given. Write down whether the two triangles must be similar, with the reason.
- 3.The number of members of a running club increases from 45 to 54. Work out the percentage increase.
- 4.Work out the lowest common multiple of 9 and 15.
- 5.Tom is asked to classify the statement 5(2x − 3) = 10x − 15. Which statement about it is correct?

Answer key
- (a) 1260 — To increase by 5%, multiply by 1.05 (100% + 5%). 1200 × 1.05 = 1260. 60 comes from working out only the increase (1200 × 0.05) and forgetting to add it to the original population. 1205 comes from adding 5 directly to 1200 instead of 5% of 1200. 1800 comes from multiplying by 1.5, using 50% instead of 5%.
- (d) Yes, by the AA condition — Method: similarity is decided by the angles, and because the three angles of a triangle add up to 180°, two matching pairs force the third pair to match as well. Working: the angles at A and D are both 40° and the angles at B and E are both 70°, so the third angles are both 180° − 40° − 70° = 70° and all three pairs are equal. Two pairs were enough, and that is the AA condition. Answer: yes, by the AA condition. The distractors: 'Yes, by the SSS condition' names a condition about three pairs of sides in proportion, and the question gives no side lengths at all; 'No, because no side lengths are given' treats side information as necessary, which it is for congruence but not for similarity; 'No, because the triangles may be different sizes' turns the definition of similarity into an objection, since similar figures are allowed to differ in size and only their shape must match.
- (c) 20% — Method: percentage increase = (increase ÷ original) × 100. Working: the increase is 54 − 45 = 9, and 9 ÷ 45 = 0.2, so the percentage increase is 0.2 × 100 = 20. Answer: 20%. The distractors: 9% comes from writing the actual increase as a percentage; 16.7% comes from dividing by the new value 54 instead of the original 45; 120% is the multiplier 1.2 written as a change rather than the change itself.
- (b) 45 — Method: list multiples of each number until one is shared by both, or use 9 = 3² and 15 = 3 × 5, taking the highest power of each prime. Working: multiples of 9 are 9, 18, 27, 36, 45 …; multiples of 15 are 15, 30, 45 …. The lowest multiple in both lists is 45. 135 comes from working out 9 × 15 = 135, the product of the two numbers rather than their lowest common multiple. 3 is the highest common factor of 9 and 15, not the lowest common multiple. 24 comes from working out 9 + 15 = 24, which is not a multiple of either number. Answer: 45.
- (b) An identity, since both sides are equal for every x. — Expanding the left-hand side: 5(2x−3)=10x−15, which is exactly the same as the right-hand side for every value of x, so it is an identity, not an equation that is only true for one particular x. A candidate who treats every equals-sign statement as an equation, without checking whether it holds for all values of x, would choose the equation option. A candidate who mistakes it for a formula is assuming it relates two different letters or quantities, but only x appears — there is no second variable such as area or cost — so it is not a formula. A candidate who mistakes it for an inequality is assuming the two sides are only equal for particular values of x, but expanding shows they are identical for every value, not just some.
- (b) 1.5 km — Multiply the map length by the scale factor: 6 × 25000 = 150000 cm. Convert to kilometres, using 100 cm = 1 m and 1000 m = 1 km, so 100000 cm = 1 km: 150000 ÷ 100000 = 1.5 km. (1500 km comes from converting only as far as metres, 150000 ÷ 100 = 1500 m, and then writing kilometres on the end. 15 km comes from dividing by 10000 instead of 100000. 0.15 km comes from dividing by 1000000 instead of 100000.)
- (c) (−4, 7) — Left of the origin means negative x, and up means positive y, so the point is (−4, 7). (4, 7) comes from forgetting that 'left' means the x-coordinate is negative. (−4, −7) comes from treating 'up' as a negative direction instead of positive. (7, −4) comes from swapping the x- and y-coordinates.
- (a) 3/5 — The question compares the rock albums directly with the pop albums, so write the rock part over the pop part: 3/5. 5/3 comes from writing the ratio the wrong way round, comparing pop with rock instead of rock with pop. 3/8 comes from comparing the rock albums with the total number of albums, 3 + 5 = 8, instead of with the pop albums. 5/8 comes from comparing the pop albums with the total number of albums instead of the rock albums with the pop albums.
- (d) £24 — Add the parts of the ratio: 2 + 3 + 7 = 12. Find the value of one part: £96 ÷ 12 = £8. Cara's share is 3 parts: 3 × £8 = £24. (£16 is Ben's share, 2 × £8, not Cara's. £56 is Dev's share, 7 × £8, not Cara's. £28.80 comes from wrongly adding the ratio parts as 10 instead of 12, giving one part = £9.60.)
- (b) £115, and C = 40 + 25h is a formula — Substitute h = 3 into the rule, multiplying before adding. The hours cost 25 × 3 = 75, and adding the call-out fee gives 40 + 75 = 115, so the charge is £115. The rule itself links two different quantities, C and h, and lets one be worked out from the other, so it is a formula; an expression would have no equals sign in it. Adding the fee before multiplying gives 65 × 3 = 195, which charges the call-out fee three times over, and stopping at 40 + 25 leaves £65, the charge for a single hour.
- (c) 155° — Turning clockwise adds to the bearing. Starting on a bearing of 065° and turning clockwise through 90° gives 065° + 90° = 155°. A candidate who instead subtracts, working out 90° − 65° = 25°, has performed the wrong operation, giving 025°. A candidate who turns anticlockwise instead of clockwise works out 065° − 90°, which gives a negative number, and adding 360° to fix this gives 335° — the bearing for turning the other way. A candidate who thinks turning does not change the bearing at all keeps the answer as 065°. The new bearing, turning clockwise, is 155°.
- (b) 900 N/m² — Pressure = force ÷ area, so 45 ÷ 0.05 = 900 N/m². Working out 45 ÷ 5 = 9 misplaces the decimal point in the area, treating 0.05 m² as 5 m². Working out 45 × 0.05 = 2.25 multiplies force and area together instead of dividing. Working out 45 + 0.05 = 45.05 simply adds the two given numbers, which does not give a pressure at all. The pressure on the ground is 900 N/m².
What is on this worksheet?
The sheet holds 12 questions drawn from the MathsUK bank — the content areas covered: Number, Algebra, Ratio, proportion and rates of change, Geometry and measures, Probability, Statistics. It is pitched at GCSE Foundation and takes about 10 minutes to work through in full. It works as a class handout, a homework, or a warm-up before a test.
How to use the sheet well
- Print it or open it on screen — both work. Printing is A4; the screen view fits phones and tablets.
- Do all 12 questions before checking — about 10 minutes is the guide, but there is no time pressure.
- Check the answers — press “Show answers” or print the answer page separately.
- Redo the questions you got wrong — twice as effective as doing 12 fresh ones.
- “New questions” — builds a fresh sheet on the same statements, so you can practise again without repeats.
Why this sheet helps
MathsUK worksheets use questions graded by difficulty and a fair spread of correct-answer positions (the answer is not always (a)) — so the student really has to think about each question rather than guess a pattern. Every question is tagged to a DfE content statement and checked before it enters the bank. The answers come with a step-by-step explanation, not just a value — so a wrong answer becomes a lesson.
