⏱️ Ten-minute starters — Foundation
Twelve short questions, two from each of the six content areas: number, algebra, ratio, geometry, probability and statistics. Nothing here needs more than a minute, and nothing needs a calculator. It is built as a lesson starter — print it, hand it out, take ten minutes, mark it together — and it works just as well as a daily warm-up at home in the fortnight before a mock. The value is in the spread rather than the depth: a student who has spent a week on algebra can find out in ten minutes what a week away from statistics has cost. Generate a new sheet whenever you want a fresh twelve on the same pattern.
- 1.A quadratic curve has a minimum turning point at (3, −4). Which of these statements about the curve must be true?
- 2.3 kg of apples cost £6. Work out the cost of 5 kg of the same apples.
- 3.A spinner is divided into sectors of 180°, 120° and 60°, coloured red, blue and green in that order. The spinner is spun 60 times. Work out how many times you would expect it to land on green.
- 4.Two triangles are similar. The sides of the first triangle are 3 cm, 4 cm and 5 cm. The shortest side of the second triangle is 9 cm. Work out the scale factor from the first triangle to the second.
- 5.Two of the angles in a triangle are 50° and 70°. Work out the size of the third angle.
- 6.A parallelogram has a base of 20 cm and a sloping side of 13 cm. The perpendicular drawn from the top of that sloping side down to the base meets the base 5 cm from the foot of the sloping side, so the perpendicular, the 5 cm and the 13 cm sloping side form a right-angled triangle. Work out the area of the parallelogram.
- 7.A solid has one curved surface and two flat circular faces of equal size, one at each end. What is the name of this solid?
- 8.A two-way table records 200 members of a gym. 80 of the members are women and the rest are men. 60 of the women attend yoga classes. Work out the percentage of the women who attend yoga classes.
- 9.Two ordinary fair dice are rolled. Work out the probability that both dice show the same score.
- 10.Four weather stations each recorded their lowest overnight temperature. Which of these readings is the lowest?
- 11.Two numbers are in the ratio 5 : 8. The larger number is 40. Work out the smaller number.
- 12.A rectangular tile measures 45 cm by 0.6 m. Work out its area, in square centimetres.
