⏱️ Ten-minute starters — Foundation
Twelve short questions, two from each of the six content areas: number, algebra, ratio, geometry, probability and statistics. Nothing here needs more than a minute, and nothing needs a calculator. It is built as a lesson starter — print it, hand it out, take ten minutes, mark it together — and it works just as well as a daily warm-up at home in the fortnight before a mock. The value is in the spread rather than the depth: a student who has spent a week on algebra can find out in ten minutes what a week away from statistics has cost. Generate a new sheet whenever you want a fresh twelve on the same pattern.
- 1.The error interval for the mass of a suitcase, m kg, is given as 22.5 ≤ m < 23.5. Write down the mass of the suitcase, correct to the nearest whole number.
- 2.A spinner is divided into sectors of 144°, 90° and 126°, coloured purple, orange and grey in that order. The spinner is spun 300 times. Work out how many times you would expect it to land on purple.
- 3.Solve the simultaneous equations 3x + 2y = 16 and x + y = 7. Work out the value of y.
- 4.A space probe is 7.5 × 10⁸ km from Earth. Write this distance as an ordinary number.
- 5.A sector of a circle has radius 6 cm and angle 150°. Using π = 3.14, work out the perimeter of the sector.
- 6.A plumber charges a £45 call-out fee, plus £28 for each hour worked. She works on a job for 3 hours 30 minutes, and her hours are billed by rounding up to the next whole hour. Work out the total amount she charges.
- 7.A scale drawing of a playground is drawn to a scale of 1 : 300. A slide measures 4 cm on the drawing. Work out the real length of the slide, in centimetres.
- 8.A recipe uses 0.625 kg of flour. Write this mass as a fraction of a kilogram, in its simplest form.
- 9.After a translation by the vector , a point lands on (4, 1). Write down the coordinates of the point before the translation.
- 10.A circle has centre O. PQ, RS and TU are three chords of the circle, and only one of them passes through O. Write down what this tells you about that chord.
- 11.A sector of a circle has an angle of 150°. Work out what fraction of the circle's area the sector is.
- 12.In a fruit bowl, the ratio of apples to oranges is 5 : 3. Work out what percentage of the fruit in the bowl is apples.
