⏱️ Ten-minute starters — Foundation
Twelve short questions, two from each of the six content areas: number, algebra, ratio, geometry, probability and statistics. Nothing here needs more than a minute, and nothing needs a calculator. It is built as a lesson starter — print it, hand it out, take ten minutes, mark it together — and it works just as well as a daily warm-up at home in the fortnight before a mock. The value is in the spread rather than the depth: a student who has spent a week on algebra can find out in ten minutes what a week away from statistics has cost. Generate a new sheet whenever you want a fresh twelve on the same pattern.
- 1.In this question, a curved surface counts as a face. How many faces does a cone have?
- 2.A map has a scale of 1 : 25 000. Two towns are 5 km apart in real life. Work out the distance between the towns on the map, in centimetres.
- 3.A triangle has vertices at (1, 1), (1, 5) and (6, 1). Work out the area of the triangle.
- 4.A scatter graph shows the number of pages, x, in a chapter and the time, y minutes, a pupil took to read it, for 15 chapters. The line of best fit has equation y = 2x + 3. Use the line of best fit to estimate the time taken to read a chapter of 10 pages.y = 2x + 3
- 5.Which of these decimals lies between 1/4 and 2/5?
- 6.A taxi firm charges a fixed fee of £3.50 plus £2.20 per mile. Work out the total cost of a journey of 6 miles.
- 7.In a mix of mortar the ratio of the mass of sand to the mass of cement is 5 : 2. Write the mass of cement as a fraction of the total mass of the mix.
- 8.Point A and point B are 5 cm apart. How many points are exactly 4 cm from A and exactly 3 cm from B?
- 9.Work out (2/3)² + (1/2)². Give your answer as a fraction.
- 10.Work out the exact value of sin 45° × cos 45°.
- 11.A cartographer is choosing a scale for a map to show a small park in as much detail as possible. Which of these scales would show the MOST detail — 1 : 500, 1 : 5000, or 1 : 50 000? Give the correct scale and reason.
- 12.Write down the coefficient of p in the expression 7 − 4p + 9q.
