⏱️ Ten-minute starters — Foundation
Twelve short questions, two from each of the six content areas: number, algebra, ratio, geometry, probability and statistics. Nothing here needs more than a minute, and nothing needs a calculator. It is built as a lesson starter — print it, hand it out, take ten minutes, mark it together — and it works just as well as a daily warm-up at home in the fortnight before a mock. The value is in the spread rather than the depth: a student who has spent a week on algebra can find out in ten minutes what a week away from statistics has cost. Generate a new sheet whenever you want a fresh twelve on the same pattern.
- 1.The number of members of a running club increases from 45 to 54. Work out the percentage increase.
- 2.Two fair five-sided dice, numbered 1 to 5, are rolled. Work out the probability that the two scores differ by at least 2.
- 3.Grace buys three items costing £9.95, £19.90 and £4.99. Work out an estimate for the total cost, by rounding each price to the nearest pound.
- 4.The diagram shows a solid built from identical cubes. How many squares are in its plan view, the view looking straight down from above?
- 5.Two straight lines PQ and RS cross at point O. Angle POR = 52°. Work out angle QOS.
- 6.A rule turns each input x into an output y. An input of 1 gives an output of 1, an input of 2 gives an output of 4 and an input of 3 gives an output of 9. Work out the rule.
- 7.Write down the expression that means the same as w ÷ 6.
- 8.Noah says that y = 3 is the solution of the equation y + 10 = 12. Noah is wrong. Work out the correct value of y.
- 9.Tom buys 2 notebooks and 6 pencils on Monday, priced at p pence each for a notebook and q pence each for a pencil. On Tuesday he buys 3 more notebooks and 1 more pencil. Write a simplified expression, in pence, for the total amount Tom has spent on notebooks and pencils.
- 10.Write down 0.2x with its coefficient written as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 11.In standard form, 2,000 is written as 2 × 10ⁿ. Write down the value of n.
- 12.Write 400 g : 1.5 kg as a ratio in its simplest form.
