⏱️ Ten-minute starters — Foundation
Twelve short questions, two from each of the six content areas: number, algebra, ratio, geometry, probability and statistics. Nothing here needs more than a minute, and nothing needs a calculator. It is built as a lesson starter — print it, hand it out, take ten minutes, mark it together — and it works just as well as a daily warm-up at home in the fortnight before a mock. The value is in the spread rather than the depth: a student who has spent a week on algebra can find out in ten minutes what a week away from statistics has cost. Generate a new sheet whenever you want a fresh twelve on the same pattern.
- 1.Ava measures a metal rod and records its length as 15 cm, correct to the nearest centimetre. Ben measures the same rod and records its length as 14.8 cm, correct to the nearest 0.1 cm. Decide whether both records can be correct, and give a reason for your answer.
- 2.Work out the equation of the straight line through the points (−3, 4) and (1, −8).
- 3.A spinner is spun 50 times. It lands on green 18 times. Work out the relative frequency of landing on green.
- 4.Which expression means 'y squared, multiplied by 3'?
- 5.Jamal is paid £54 for working 6 hours. Work out his rate of pay, in £ per hour.
- 6.Given that (x + 2)(x − 7) = 0, write down the two solutions of x.
- 7.Two numbers are in the ratio 5 : 8. The larger number is 40. Work out the smaller number.
- 8.A tangent to a circle touches the circle at exactly one point, P. Work out the size of the angle between the tangent and the radius drawn to P.
- 9.A quadrilateral has exactly two lines of symmetry, its two pairs of opposite angles are equal, and its diagonals are not equal in length. Write down the name of this quadrilateral.
- 10.Maya buys a vintage car for £15000. Its value is expected to increase by 4% each year for 2 years. She then plans to sell the car and use £2000 of the money from the sale to buy a trailer. Work out how much money she will have left after selling the car and buying the trailer.
- 11.The attendance at a football match is 23,000, correct to the nearest thousand. Which of these attendances is not possible for the match?
- 12.A jumper normally costs £45. In a sale it is reduced by 20%. Work out the sale price, then write the sale price as a fraction of the normal price. Give your answer in its simplest form.
