⏱️ Ten-minute starters — Foundation
Twelve short questions, two from each of the six content areas: number, algebra, ratio, geometry, probability and statistics. Nothing here needs more than a minute, and nothing needs a calculator. It is built as a lesson starter — print it, hand it out, take ten minutes, mark it together — and it works just as well as a daily warm-up at home in the fortnight before a mock. The value is in the spread rather than the depth: a student who has spent a week on algebra can find out in ten minutes what a week away from statistics has cost. Generate a new sheet whenever you want a fresh twelve on the same pattern.
- 1.A textbook is reduced from £60 to £45. Work out the percentage reduction.
- 2.A builder props a straight plank against a vertical wall to reach a window ledge. The foot of the plank is 2.1 m from the base of the wall, and the plank is 3.5 m long. Work out how high up the wall the plank reaches.
- 3.Work out 250 ÷ 1000.
- 4.A rectangular bookmark measures 2 cm by 25 cm. Work out the area of the bookmark.
- 5.On a Saturday, 2,000 customers go through the tills at a supermarket. The probability that a customer buys a reusable bag is 0.08. Work out how many customers you would expect to buy a reusable bag.
- 6.Solve the inequality 3x + 6 ≤ 0.
- 7.A candle is 30 cm tall when lit and burns at a constant rate. After burning for 5 minutes, its height is 20 cm. The height h cm after t minutes is given by h = 30 − mt. Work out the value of m.
- 8.The graph of y = mx + 6 passes through the point (−2, 0). Work out the value of m.
- 9.A recipe uses 1.25 kg of flour. Work out how many grams of flour this is.
- 10.Two angles are complementary. One of them is 35°. Work out the size of the other angle.
- 11.A circular plate has a diameter of 20 cm. Work out the area of the plate. Use π = 3.14.
- 12.A taxi firm charges a fixed fee of £3.50 plus £2.20 per mile. Work out the total cost of a journey of 6 miles.
