⏱️ Ten-minute starters — Foundation
Twelve short questions, two from each of the six content areas: number, algebra, ratio, geometry, probability and statistics. Nothing here needs more than a minute, and nothing needs a calculator. It is built as a lesson starter — print it, hand it out, take ten minutes, mark it together — and it works just as well as a daily warm-up at home in the fortnight before a mock. The value is in the spread rather than the depth: a student who has spent a week on algebra can find out in ten minutes what a week away from statistics has cost. Generate a new sheet whenever you want a fresh twelve on the same pattern.
- 1.Which expression is equivalent to 5x − (x + 3)?
- 2.Solve 4x + 3 = 19
- 3.The braking distance of a car, in metres, is estimated using the formula d = 0.4v² + 6, where v is the speed in mph. A car travelling at 35 mph brakes. Work out the estimated braking distance.
- 4.A jar of jam costs £2.35. Tom buys 3 jars. He says the total cost is more than £7. Work out the exact total cost, and state whether Tom's claim is correct.
- 5.The diagram shows the plan, front elevation and side elevation of a solid. Which solid could this be?
- 6.The point F has x-coordinate −1 and lies 6 units above the x-axis. Write down the coordinates of F.
- 7.A fair six-sided dice is rolled 90 times. Work out how many more times you would expect it to land on a number less than 4 than on a 6.
- 8.Round 0.006482 to 2 significant figures.
- 9.Four books have 120, 200, 160 and 80 pages. Work out the mean number of pages.
- 10.A washing machine costs £320 before VAT. VAT is charged at 20%. Work out the total price including VAT.
- 11.Two cars travel at constant speeds. Car A travels 150 km in 3 hours. Car B travels 180 km in 4 hours. Which car is faster, and what is its speed?
- 12.Work out (−2)³ + (−3)² − (−4)
