⏱️ Ten-minute starters — Foundation
Twelve short questions, two from each of the six content areas: number, algebra, ratio, geometry, probability and statistics. Nothing here needs more than a minute, and nothing needs a calculator. It is built as a lesson starter — print it, hand it out, take ten minutes, mark it together — and it works just as well as a daily warm-up at home in the fortnight before a mock. The value is in the spread rather than the depth: a student who has spent a week on algebra can find out in ten minutes what a week away from statistics has cost. Generate a new sheet whenever you want a fresh twelve on the same pattern.
- 1.Four locations each record a temperature one winter morning. Which of these temperatures is the coldest?
- 2.Which of these ratios is equivalent to 2:3?
- 3.In a music collection, the ratio of pop albums to rock albums is 5 : 3. Work out the number of rock albums as a fraction of the number of pop albums.
- 4.Work out 35% of 180.
- 5.A sofa costs £800. Its price is increased by 25%. Work out the new price of the sofa.
- 6.The price of a jacket increases by 50% and then decreases by 50%. Describe the overall change from the original price.
- 7.The column vector describes a translation. Write down the movement it represents.
- 8.A council surveyed 140 households about recycling. 85 of the households are in Zone A. 52 of the Zone A households recycle glass. 21 of the Zone B households do not recycle glass. Work out the probability that a household, chosen at random from the 140, recycles glass. Give your answer as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 9.Which of these numbers is a common factor of 18 and 24?
- 10.A trapezium has parallel sides of 16 cm and 24 cm, and a perpendicular height of 7 cm. Work out the area of the trapezium.
- 11.All four sides of a rhombus are the same length. One side of a rhombus is 7 cm long. Work out the perimeter of the rhombus.
- 12.Work out 50% of 60.
