⏱️ Ten-minute starters — Foundation
Twelve short questions, two from each of the six content areas: number, algebra, ratio, geometry, probability and statistics. Nothing here needs more than a minute, and nothing needs a calculator. It is built as a lesson starter — print it, hand it out, take ten minutes, mark it together — and it works just as well as a daily warm-up at home in the fortnight before a mock. The value is in the spread rather than the depth: a student who has spent a week on algebra can find out in ten minutes what a week away from statistics has cost. Generate a new sheet whenever you want a fresh twelve on the same pattern.
- 1.Write down the reciprocal of 5/8
- 2.A cuboid measures 5 cm long (left to right), 3 cm deep (front to back) and 2 cm tall. Its front elevation is 5 cm wide by 2 cm high. Its side elevation is 3 cm wide by 2 cm high. What are the dimensions of its plan view, looking down from above?
- 3.The triangular numbers begin 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, ... Work out the next term in the sequence.
- 4.Work out the highest common factor of 20 and 32.
- 5.A sculptor makes two mathematically similar statues. The smaller statue is 20 cm tall and 80 ml of varnish covers its surface. The larger statue is 50 cm tall. Work out how much varnish is needed to cover the surface of the larger statue.
- 6.The formula for the circumference of a circle is C = 2πr, where r is the radius. Make r the subject of the formula.
- 7.Make c the subject of the formula k = 6c.
- 8.A map has a scale of 1 : 20 000. A different map of the same area has a scale of 1 : 80 000. A lake's shoreline is drawn 5 cm long on the first map. Work out the length of the same shoreline on the second map, in centimetres.
- 9.A train leaves Leeds at 14:35. The journey takes 1 hour 50 minutes. Work out the time the train arrives. Give your answer using the 24-hour clock.
- 10.The point P has coordinates (0, 12). Write down the axis that P lies on and the y-coordinate of P.
- 11.The graph of y = 24/x is drawn for x > 0. Work out the value of y when x = 6.
- 12.Jack rolls two ordinary fair dice and adds the two scores together. Work out the probability that the total is 6.
