- 1.The formula for the energy stored in a stretched spring is E = (1/2)kx², where E is in joules, k is the spring constant in N/m and x is the extension in m. A spring with a spring constant of 40 N/m is stretched so that its extension is 0.3 m. Work out the energy stored in the spring.
- 2.A ball is thrown in the air. Its height, h metres, above the ground after t seconds is given in this table: when t = 0, h = 0; when t = 1, h = 15; when t = 2, h = 20; when t = 3, h = 15; when t = 4, h = 0. Use the table to find the two times, in seconds, at which the ball is at ground level.
- 3.A park is drawn on a grid in which 1 unit represents 1 km. The car park is at the point (0, 0) and the lake is at the point (3, 5). Work out the direct distance, in km, from the car park to the lake, giving your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 4.Sophie's mother is 34 years old. In x years' time she will be 50 years old. Work out the value of x.
- 5.The formula for converting a distance in miles, m, to kilometres, k, is k = 8m ÷ 5. Work out k when m = 10.
- 6.A ball's height, h metres, t seconds after being thrown follows h = (t − 1)(9 − t). Given that the ball is at ground level at t = 1 and t = 9, work out at what time t the ball reaches its maximum height, using symmetry.
- 7.A gym charges a joining fee plus a monthly fee. Anna paid £100 in total after 3 months of membership. Ben paid £160 in total after 6 months of membership (same joining fee and monthly fee as Anna). Work out the monthly fee.
- 8.The graph of y = x² − 2x − 8 takes these values: when x = −2, y = 0; when x = −1, y = −5; when x = 0, y = −8; when x = 3, y = −5; when x = 4, y = 0. Use these values to write down the two solutions of x² − 2x − 8 = 0.y = x² − 2x − 8
- 9.The braking distance of a car, in metres, is estimated using the formula d = 0.4v² + 6, where v is the speed in mph. A car travelling at 35 mph brakes. Work out the estimated braking distance.

Answer key
- (a) 1.8 — E = (1/2)kx² = 0.5 × 40 × 0.3² = 0.5 × 40 × 0.09 = 1.8 joules. 3.6 comes from forgetting the (1/2) at the front, 40 × 0.09. 72 comes from squaring kx together instead of squaring only x, 0.5 × (40 × 0.3)² = 0.5 × 144 = 72. 6 comes from using x instead of x², 0.5 × 40 × 0.3.
- (a) t = 0 or t = 4 — The ball is at ground level exactly when h = 0. From the table, h = 0 at t = 0 and at t = 4, so those are the two times. Distractor origins: t = 1 or t = 3 picks the times with equal (but non-zero) height instead of ground level; t = 2 picks the time of maximum height instead of ground level; t = 0 finds only the starting time and misses the second one.
- (a) 5.8 — The horizontal distance is 3 and the vertical distance is 5, so using Pythagoras' theorem the distance is √(3² + 5²) = √34 = 5.8 (1 d.p.). A candidate who adds the two differences instead of using Pythagoras gets 3 + 5 = 8.0. A candidate who works out 3² + 5² = 34 but forgets to take the square root gets 34.0. A candidate who subtracts the squares instead of adding them gets √(5² − 3²) = √16 = 4.0.
- (a) 16 — Method: the future age is the present age plus the number of years, so form that equation and solve it. Working: 34 + x = 50, and subtracting 34 from both sides gives x = 50 − 34 = 16. Answer: 16. The distractors: 84 comes from adding the two ages instead of subtracting, 34 + 50; 50 comes from giving her future age rather than the number of years that pass; 24 comes from a column subtraction in which the smaller digit is taken from the larger in each column, 4 − 0 and 5 − 3, instead of exchanging.
- (a) 16 — k = 8m ÷ 5 = (8 × 10) ÷ 5 = 80 ÷ 5 = 16. A candidate who multiplies 8 by 10 but forgets to divide by 5 gets 80. A candidate who divides 10 by 8 and multiplies by 5, using the fraction upside down, gets 10 × 5 ÷ 8 = 6.25. A candidate who adds instead of substituting into the formula gets 8 + 10 = 18.
- (d) t = 5 — The maximum height occurs halfway between the two times when the ball is at ground level: the midpoint of t = 1 and t = 9 is (1 + 9) ÷ 2 = 5, so the ball reaches its maximum height at t = 5 seconds. Getting t = 4 comes from halving the DIFFERENCE between the times, 9 − 1 = 8, then 8 ÷ 2 = 4, instead of finding their midpoint. Getting t = 8 uses that difference, 9 − 1 = 8, as if the gap between the two times were itself the time of the maximum. Getting t = 10 adds the two times, 1 + 9 = 10, but forgets to divide by 2.
- (d) £20 — Let f be the joining fee and m the monthly fee: f + 3m = 100 and f + 6m = 160. Subtracting the first equation from the second eliminates f: 3m = 60, so m = 20. A candidate who finds the joining fee instead of the monthly fee would get f = 100 − 3(20) = £40. A candidate who divides Ben's total by his number of months, ignoring that part of the cost is a fixed joining fee, would get 160 ÷ 6 ≈ £26.67. A candidate who divides the difference in cost by the total number of months instead of the difference in months would get (160 − 100) ÷ 9 ≈ £6.67.
- (c) x = −2 or x = 4 — The solutions of x² − 2x − 8 = 0 are the x-values where y = 0. From the table, y = 0 when x = −2 and when x = 4, so those are the two solutions. Distractor origins: x = −1 or x = 3 picks the pair of x-values that give equal (but non-zero) y-values instead of y = 0; x = 0 or x = −8 mixes up an x-value with its corresponding y-value; x = −2 only reads off one of the two roots and misses the other.
- (c) 496 — d = 0.4v² + 6. First v² = 35 × 35 = 1225. Then 0.4 × 1225 = 490. Add 6: 490 + 6 = 496 m. 490 comes from forgetting to add the 6 at the end. 202 comes from squaring 0.4v together instead of squaring only v, (0.4 × 35)² + 6 = 14² + 6 = 202. 20 comes from using v instead of v², 0.4 × 35 + 6.
- (b) 6 — 3n + 4.5 = 22.5, so 3n = 18 and n = 6. A candidate who divides 22.5 by 3 first and ignores the 4.5 gets n = 7.5. A candidate who makes a sign error and forms the equation 3n − 4.5 = 22.5 gets 3n = 27 and n = 9. A candidate who divides by 3 before subtracting the 4.5, working out 22.5 ÷ 3 + 4.5, gets n = 12.
- (a) 3ab — 3 × a × b means 3, a and b are all multiplied together, and in algebraic notation this is written with no multiplication signs: 3ab. Writing 3 + a + b turns every multiplication into an addition, giving a completely different expression. Writing a³b misreads the 3 as a power on a rather than as a coefficient in front of both letters. Writing 3a + b multiplies the 3 by a correctly but then adds b instead of also multiplying it in. The expression that means 3 × a × b is 3ab.
- (c) 5 hours — Substitute s = 48 into the relationship: t = 240 ÷ 48 = 5 hours. Inverting the relationship, s ÷ 240 = 48 ÷ 240 = 0.2, gives 0.2 hours. Misplacing the decimal point in the division, 240 ÷ 48 read as 4.8, gives 4.8 hours. Halving the speed to 24 mph by mistake before dividing, 240 ÷ 24 = 10, gives 10 hours.
- (d) 15b — Method: each balloon costs 15p, so b balloons cost 15 × b pence. Working: 15 × b = 15b. Answer: 15b. b + 15 comes from treating the 15p as a one-off addition rather than a rate applied to every balloon. b − 15 comes from misreading the situation as a discount rather than a cost per balloon. b/15 comes from dividing instead of multiplying, swapping the two operations.
- (b) x ≥ 5 — Expand the bracket: 2(3x − 1) = 6x − 2, so the inequality is 6x − 2 ≥ 4x + 8. Subtract 4x from both sides and add 2 to both sides: 2x ≥ 10. Divide both sides by 2: x ≥ 5. A candidate who only multiplies the 3x by 2 and forgets to multiply the −1 gets 6x − 1 ≥ 4x + 8, leading to x ≥ 4.5. A candidate who adds 4x instead of subtracting it gets 10x ≥ 10, leading to x ≥ 1. A candidate who multiplies by 2 instead of dividing gets x ≥ 20.
- (b) 3 — Method: a term is any part of an expression separated from the rest by a + or − sign, including a number on its own. Working: 8 − 3x + 5x² splits at the + and − signs into 8, −3x and 5x² — that is three separate terms. Answer: 3. Ryan's answer of 2 comes from wrongly excluding the number 8, thinking a term must contain a letter. 5 comes from miscounting by treating the coefficients and powers as separate terms as well as the letters. 1 comes from treating the whole expression as a single term because it is written without brackets.
