- (b) 6x + 6 — Perimeter = 2[(2x + 5) + (x − 2)] = 2(3x + 3) = 6x + 6. A candidate who adds the length and width but forgets to double for the perimeter gets 3x + 3. A candidate who makes a sign error and adds 2 instead of subtracting it before doubling gets 2[(2x + 5) + (x + 2)] = 6x + 14. A candidate who multiplies the length and width instead of adding them, confusing the perimeter formula with the area formula, and then doubles that product, gets 2(2x + 5)(x − 2) = 4x² + 2x − 20.
- (a) 3.5 km/h — Average speed is total distance ÷ total time. Total distance = 5 + 9 = 14 km. Total time, including the rest, = 1 + 1 + 2 = 4 hours. So average speed = 14 ÷ 4 = 3.5 km/h. Leaving out the 1 hour rest and dividing by only the 3 hours of walking gives 14 ÷ 3 = 4.67 km/h. Averaging the two separate speeds, 5 km/h and 4.5 km/h, instead of using total distance over total time, gives (5 + 4.5) ÷ 2 = 4.75 km/h. Dividing only the second leg's distance by the total time, 9 ÷ 4 = 2.25 km/h, ignores the first leg's distance.
- (d) 7 — Method: set up the equation 2.50 + 1.80m = 15.10, then subtract the booking fee and divide by the cost per mile. Working: 1.80m = 15.10 − 2.50 = 12.60; m = 12.60 ÷ 1.80 = 7. Answer: 7 miles. 8.39 comes from dividing the whole £15.10 by £1.80 without first subtracting the booking fee: 15.10 ÷ 1.80 ≈ 8.39. 5.32 comes from swapping the two amounts round, subtracting £1.80 and dividing by £2.50: (15.10 − 1.80) ÷ 2.50 ≈ 5.32. 9.78 comes from adding the booking fee instead of subtracting it: (15.10 + 2.50) ÷ 1.80 ≈ 9.78.
- (c) 5 — Method: let a be the number of adult tickets, so the number of child tickets is 9 − a. Form the equation 10a + 6(9 − a) = 74. Working: expand the bracket: 10a + 54 − 6a = 74, so 4a = 20, giving a = 5. Answer: 5 adult tickets. 4 comes from correctly finding the number of child tickets but reporting it instead of the number of adult tickets asked for. 1.25 comes from a sign error expanding the bracket, writing 10a + 54 + 6a = 74 instead of subtracting, which gives 16a = 20. 7.4 comes from dividing the total takings by the adult ticket price only, ignoring the children entirely, 74 ÷ 10.
- (a) y + 1 — The brother's age now is y − 4. In 5 years' time this becomes y − 4 + 5 = y + 1. A candidate who adds 4 instead of subtracting it, then adds 5, gets y + 4 + 5 = y + 9. A candidate who subtracts 5 instead of adding it gets y − 4 − 5 = y − 9. A candidate who works out the brother's current age but forgets to add on the 5 years gets y − 4.
- (b) 3 — Method: a term is any part of an expression separated from the rest by a + or − sign, including a number on its own. Working: 8 − 3x + 5x² splits at the + and − signs into 8, −3x and 5x² — that is three separate terms. Answer: 3. Ryan's answer of 2 comes from wrongly excluding the number 8, thinking a term must contain a letter. 5 comes from miscounting by treating the coefficients and powers as separate terms as well as the letters. 1 comes from treating the whole expression as a single term because it is written without brackets.
- (c) x = −2 or x = 4 — The solutions of x² − 2x − 8 = 0 are the x-values where y = 0. From the table, y = 0 when x = −2 and when x = 4, so those are the two solutions. Distractor origins: x = −1 or x = 3 picks the pair of x-values that give equal (but non-zero) y-values instead of y = 0; x = 0 or x = −8 mixes up an x-value with its corresponding y-value; x = −2 only reads off one of the two roots and misses the other.
- (a) 30 US dollars — £24 is 6 times £4, and the same scale factor applies to US dollars, so multiply 5 by 6: 5 × 6 = 30, giving 30 US dollars. Multiplying £24 by 4/5, the pounds-per-dollar ratio, instead of by 5/4, the dollars-per-pound ratio, gives 24 × 4/5 = 19.2, applying the ratio the wrong way round and giving 19.20 US dollars. Adding the extra £20 straight onto the 5 as if £1 equalled 1 US dollar, 5 + 20 = 25, gives 25 US dollars. Multiplying £24 by 5 without first dividing by the original £4, 24 × 5 = 120, gives 120 US dollars.
- (d) 8 — Method: write both present ages in terms of one letter, take four years off each of them, and form an equation from the comparison four years ago. Working: let Amelia be y, so her mother is 3y; four years ago they were y − 4 and 3y − 4, giving 3y − 4 = 5(y − 4); expanding gives 3y − 4 = 5y − 20; adding 20 and subtracting 3y from both sides gives 16 = 2y, and dividing by 2 gives y = 8. Checking: Amelia is 8 and her mother 24; four years ago they were 4 and 20, and 20 = 5 × 4. Answer: 8. The distractors: 4 comes from solving correctly but giving Amelia's age four years ago instead of her age now; 16 comes from stopping at 2y = 16 and giving 16 as her age; 2 comes from collecting the y terms by adding the 5y instead of subtracting it, giving 3y + 5y = 20 − 4 and so 8y = 16.
- (c) 16 km/h — Method: total distance = 12 + 8 = 20 km. Total time = 30 + 30 + 15 = 75 minutes = 1.25 hours. Average speed = total distance ÷ total time = 20 ÷ 1.25 = 16 km/h. Distractor origins: 20 km/h gives the total distance without ever dividing by the total time; 24 km/h uses only the speed of the first stage (12 km in 30 minutes), ignoring the second stage and the rest; 28 km/h averages the two separate stage speeds, 24 km/h and 32 km/h, instead of using total distance over total time.
- (a) 23 — The number of logs increases by 4 for each layer down, starting from 3 in the top layer, so the nth layer has 3+(n−1)×4 logs. For the 6th layer: 3+5×4=3+20=23. A candidate who adds the difference of 4 six times instead of five, treating the top layer as needing an addition too, would compute 3+6×4=27. A candidate who uses 4n instead of 4n−1, omitting the adjustment for the first layer, would compute 4×6=24. A candidate who subtracts the common difference, 4, instead of 1 when adjusting the multiplier would compute 4×6−4=20.
- (a) 4n + 1 — Method: find the increase in cost per hour, then find the constant by adjusting the 1-hour cost. Working: the cost goes up by £4 for each extra hour (9 − 5 = 4), so the coefficient of n is 4. The constant is the 1-hour cost minus the common difference: 5 − 4 = 1. Answer: the nth term is 4n + 1. 4n + 5 comes from using the 1-hour cost, 5, as the constant without subtracting the common difference. 4n − 3 comes from a slip in working out the constant, subtracting the common difference twice (5 − 4 − 4 = −3) instead of once. n + 4 comes from swapping the hourly increase and the constant.
- (d) 12 — Method: call the younger brother's age x, write the elder brother's age in terms of x, and form an equation from the total. Working: the elder brother is x + 6, so x + (x + 6) = 30; simplifying gives 2x + 6 = 30, subtracting 6 from both sides gives 2x = 24, and dividing by 2 gives x = 12. Checking: 12 and 18 add up to 30 and differ by 6. Answer: 12. The distractors: 18 comes from solving correctly and then giving the elder brother's age, which is not the age asked for; 15 comes from halving 30 and ignoring the 6-year difference altogether; 24 comes from taking 6 off the total, 30 − 6 = 24, and giving that as an age.
- (c) 3x + 5 = 17 — An equation contains an equals sign and is true only for particular value(s) of the unknown — solving 3x + 5 = 17 gives the single value x = 4. 3x + 5 is an expression: it has no equals sign, so it cannot be solved, only simplified or evaluated. A = πr² is a formula: it shows the general relationship between different quantities (area and radius), rather than asking for one unknown value. 3(x + 5) ≡ 3x + 15 is an identity: the ≡ sign shows it is true for every value of x, not just one. The equation is 3x + 5 = 17.
- (b) 3 + 2m — Method: add the fixed fee to the cost of the miles travelled. Working: the miles cost 2 × m = 2m pounds, and the fixed fee is £3, so the total is 3 + 2m. Answer: 3 + 2m. 2 + 3m comes from swapping which number is the fixed fee and which is the per-mile rate. 5 + m comes from adding the fixed fee and the rate together into one number, 3 + 2 = 5, before adding the miles, instead of multiplying the rate by the number of miles. 5m comes from multiplying that combined total by the miles, treating the whole £5 as if it were a per-mile rate.
