- 1.Harry will spend at most £150 on a party. The cake costs £60 and each helium balloon costs £3. Solve an inequality to find all the possible numbers of balloons, x, that he can buy.
- 2.A runner's journey is shown on a distance-time graph: she runs 8 km in the first hour, rests for 30 minutes with no distance gained, then runs a further 4 km in the next 30 minutes. Work out her average speed for the whole journey, in kilometres per hour.
- 3.The simultaneous equations 2x + 3y = 12 and x − y = 1 are given. Work out the value of y.
- 4.For the equation 2x + 3 = 11, and the inequality 2x + 3 > 11, which statement correctly compares their solutions?
- 5.A graph has equation y = x² − 6x + 5. A student says its turning point has x-coordinate 6, because that's the coefficient of x. Which statement corrects the student's mistake?y = x² − 6x + 5
- 6.Solve x² + 3x − 10 = 0.
- 7.A ball's height, h metres, t seconds after being thrown follows h = (t − 1)(9 − t). Given that the ball is at ground level at t = 1 and t = 9, work out at what time t the ball reaches its maximum height, using symmetry.
- 8.Work out the value of 5y + 9 when y = 0
- 9.A number, n, is doubled and then 7 is subtracted. The result is 15. Form an equation and solve it to find n.
- 10.Expand and simplify (x − 3)²
- 11.A geometric sequence begins 162, 54, 18, 6, ... Work out the next term in the sequence.
- 12.The graph of y = 20/x is drawn for x > 0. As the value of x increases, what happens to the value of y?
- 13.Make x the subject of the formula y = 4(x − 6).
- 14.The first four terms of a sequence are 6, 13, 20, 27. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the nth term.
- 15.Solve 3x − 5 = 4.
