- 1.The formula y = x² + 1 gives y in terms of x. Work out the value of y when x = −2.y = x² + 1
- 2.The nth term of a sequence is 4n − 3. Work out the 7th term of the sequence.
- 3.A student says that (x + 4)² is equivalent to x² + 16. For which value of x do the two expressions give the SAME result, making it look (misleadingly) like the student could be right?
- 4.Solve 4x + 3 = 19
- 5.Work out the value of 5a + 2 when a = 3
- 6.The graph of y = x² − 5x + 6 crosses the x-axis at two points. By factorising, work out the x-coordinates of these two points.y = x² − 5x + 6
- 7.A walker's distance-time graph is described as follows: she walks 3 km in the first 15 minutes at a steady speed, rests for 10 minutes, then walks a further 3 km in the next 20 minutes, also at a steady speed. Work out her speed, in km/h, during the first 15 minutes.
- 8.A number machine multiplies its input by 3. The output is 15. Work out the input.
- 9.A graph shows the total monthly cost of a mobile phone tariff against the number of minutes of calls. The line starts at £12 and stays level until 200 minutes, then rises by 5p for each further minute of calls. Use the graph to work out the total cost of a month in which 250 minutes of calls are made.
- 10.Work out the value of 3n − 2 when n = 1
- 11.The simultaneous equations y = 3 and 4x − y = 9 are given. Work out the value of x.
- 12.A theatre's front row has 18 seats. Each row behind has 4 more seats than the row in front. Which row has exactly 62 seats?
- 13.Simplify 5a/6 − a/3
- 14.Solve 6x + 4 = 28
- 15.A quadratic graph has equation y = (x − 4)². A student says this graph crosses the x-axis at two different points. Explain why the student is wrong.
