- 1.Point A has coordinates (4, −5). Point B has coordinates (4, 3). Work out the distance between A and B.
- 2.Two brothers have ages that add up to 30. The elder brother is 6 years older than the younger brother. Work out the age of the younger brother.
- 3.The diagram shows a distance–time graph for a cyclist travelling at a constant speed, for the first 6 minutes of a journey. Distance is in kilometres and time is in minutes. Work out how far the cyclist would travel in 20 minutes at the same speed.
- 4.Work out the value of 5y + 9 when y = 0
- 5.A water tank empties according to y = −5x + 200, where y is the number of litres left after x minutes. Work out the coordinates of the point where this graph crosses the x-axis.y = -5x + 200
- 6.Make x the subject of the formula y = 4x − 3.y = 4x − 3
- 7.Rosie is asked whether 4(x + 3) = 4x + 12 is an equation or an identity. Which statement is correct? Give a reason for your answer.
- 8.Solve 5x − 9 = 16
- 9.To rearrange the formula y = 3x − 8 to make x the subject, Priya writes: 'Add 8 to both sides to get y + 8 = 3x, then divide both sides by 3 to get x = y + 8 ÷ 3.' Work out the correct expression for x.y = 3x − 8
- 10.A straight line has equation 4y = 12x + 20. Work out the gradient of the line.y = 12x + 20
- 11.A car's speed-time graph shows the following: its speed increases steadily from 0 m/s to 20 m/s over the first 10 seconds, then stays constant at 20 m/s for the next 15 seconds. Work out the total distance travelled in the first 25 seconds.
- 12.The solution set of an inequality is x ≥ 7. Write down the value that does NOT satisfy this inequality.
- 13.A quadratic graph has equation y = (x − 4)². A student says this graph crosses the x-axis at two different points. Explain why the student is wrong.
- 14.n = 3. Work out the value of (2n)².
- 15.A straight line has equation y = 4 − 3x. Work out the gradient of the line.
