- 1.a = 3 and b = 5. Work out the value of a²b.
- 2.Water is poured into a container at a constant rate. A graph of the depth of the water, in cm, against the time since pouring began, in minutes, is a straight line through the origin, and it passes through the point (3, 12). Use the graph to work out the depth of the water after 7 minutes.
- 3.Given that (x − 4)(x + 9) = 0, write down the two solutions of x.
- 4.Solve 4(x − 3) = 2x + 6.
- 5.Solve 5x + 2 = 17.
- 6.A model rocket's height is given by h = −5t² + 20t, where h is in metres and t is in seconds. A student says the graph of h against t is n-shaped. Which statement gives the correct verdict on the SHAPE and the reason that settles it from the equation?
- 7.A pattern is made from tiles. Pattern 1 uses 4 tiles, pattern 2 uses 7 tiles, pattern 3 uses 10 tiles and pattern 4 uses 13 tiles, with each pattern using 3 more tiles than the one before. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the number of tiles used in pattern n.
- 8.A plumber charges a £40 call-out fee plus £25 for each hour worked. The total charge, £C, for a job lasting h hours is given by C = 40 + 25h. Work out the charge for a job lasting 3 hours, and name what kind of statement C = 40 + 25h is.
- 9.Solve (2x + 1)/3 = 5
- 10.A pattern is made from tiles. Pattern 1 has 7 tiles, pattern 2 has 11 tiles, pattern 3 has 15 tiles, and pattern 4 has 19 tiles, with each new pattern having 4 more tiles than the one before it. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the number of tiles in pattern n.
- 11.Work out the values of x and y that satisfy both x + y = 10 and x − y = 4.
- 12.A gym charges a joining fee plus a monthly fee. Anna paid £100 in total after 3 months of membership. Ben paid £160 in total after 6 months of membership (same joining fee and monthly fee as Anna). Work out the monthly fee.
- 13.Write down the expression that means the same as 3 × y × y.
- 14.A rectangle has area 24x + 18. Ffion factorises the area as 6(4x + 3). Work out the value of the area when x = 2, and decide whether 6 and (4x + 3) are correctly identified as factors of 24x + 18.
- 15.Solve 4x − (2x − 6) = 18
