- 1.y = 5x − 1. Work out the value of y when x = 3.y = 5x − 1
- 2.Priya says that x = 6 is the solution of the equation 4x + 8 = 24. Priya is wrong. Work out the correct value of x.
- 3.Which expression is equivalent to 0.5(4x + 6) − x?
- 4.The formula for the perimeter of a square is P = 4s, where s is the side length. Make s the subject of the formula.
- 5.A distance-time graph shows a car travelling at a constant speed, covering 90 km in 2 hours. Work out the car's speed in km/h.
- 6.Write down the expression that means 5 more than half of n.
- 7.A car's speed increases steadily while it accelerates. Its speed v m/s after t seconds is given by v = u + at, where u is the starting speed in m/s and a is the acceleration in m/s². A car starts at u = 4 m/s and accelerates at a = 2 m/s² until it reaches v = 20 m/s. Work out t, the time taken in seconds.
- 8.Make x the subject of the formula y = 2x − 9.y = 2x − 9
- 9.A cyclist's distance-time graph shows the following: she travels 12 km in the first 30 minutes at a steady speed, then rests for 30 minutes, then travels a further 8 km in the next 15 minutes. Work out her average speed, in km/h, for the whole journey.
- 10.Simplify 5a/6 − a/3
- 11.The simultaneous equations 2x + 3y = 12 and x − y = 1 are given. Work out the value of y.
- 12.Factorise x² − 64.
- 13.Solve x² − 2x − 24 = 0.
- 14.Tom buys 2 notebooks and 6 pencils on Monday, priced at p pence each for a notebook and q pence each for a pencil. On Tuesday he buys 3 more notebooks and 1 more pencil. Write a simplified expression, in pence, for the total amount Tom has spent on notebooks and pencils.
- 15.An equation has exactly one value of x that makes it true, but an identity is true for every value of x. Which of these best explains why 3x + 5 = 20 is an equation rather than an identity?
