- 1.The area of a circle is given by the formula A = πr², where r is the radius. Rearrange the formula to make r the subject.
- 2.To rearrange y = 2x − 5 to make x the subject, Sam writes: 'Add 5 to both sides to get y + 5 = 2x, then divide both sides by 2 to get x = (y + 5)/2.' Which statement about Sam's method is correct?y = 2x − 5
- 3.A coach company charges a booking fee plus a price for each passenger. A booking for 1 passenger costs £9, for 2 passengers costs £15, for 3 passengers costs £21, and for 4 passengers costs £27. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the cost in pounds of a booking for n passengers.
- 4.A water tank empties according to y = −5x + 200, where y is the number of litres left after x minutes. Work out the coordinates of the point where this graph crosses the x-axis.y = -5x + 200
- 5.A plumber charges a £35 call-out fee plus £20 for each hour worked, h. On a certain job the total charge was £115. Work out how many hours the plumber worked.
- 6.The graph of y = x² − 7x + 2 crosses the x-axis at two points. One root, read from the graph, is approximately x = 0.30. Using the fact that the sum of the two roots of x² − 7x + 2 = 0 is 7, estimate the other root, correct to 2 decimal places.y = x² − 7x + 2
- 7.A company's profit is £500 in its first year. Each year after that, the profit is £300 more than the year before. Work out the profit in the company's 6th year.
- 8.Write down the expression that means the same as (x + 7) ÷ 4.
- 9.A candle is 30 cm tall when lit and burns at a constant rate. After burning for 5 minutes, its height is 20 cm. The height h cm after t minutes is given by h = 30 − mt. Work out the value of m.
- 10.Solve 2x − 2 = 2
- 11.Which of these quadratic graphs does NOT cross the x-axis at all?
- 12.Which expression means 'triple c, then add double d'?
- 13.Point A has coordinates (4, −5). Point B has coordinates (4, 3). Work out the distance between A and B.
- 14.The solution to an inequality is n ≤ 5. Write down the largest integer value of n that satisfies this inequality.
