- 1.Two numbers have a sum of 45. The larger number is 9 more than the smaller number. Form an equation using n for the smaller number, and solve it to find the larger number.
- 2.The graph of t = 240 ÷ s shows how the time, t hours, taken for a car journey of 240 miles depends on its average speed, s mph. Use the relationship to work out the time taken when the average speed is 48 mph.
- 3.A number machine multiplies its input by 3 and then adds 7. The output is 1. Work out the input.
- 4.Solve (3x + 2)/5 = (x + 4)/3
- 5.Work out the gradient of the straight line with equation y = (2x/5) − 3.
- 6.Solve the inequality 6x ≥ 18.
- 7.A table shows y = x² − 6x + 5 at these points (x, y): (0, 5), (1, 0), (2, −3), (3, −4), (4, −3), (5, 0), (6, 5). Using the symmetry shown, write down the x-coordinate of the turning point.y = x² − 6x + 5
- 8.Which of these is a term, rather than a whole expression, an equation, or a formula?
- 9.Solve the simultaneous equations 3x + y = 14 and x + y = 6. Work out the value of x.
- 10.The first five terms of a sequence are 2, 5, 8, 11, 14. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the nth term.

- 12.Which expression is equivalent to 5x − (x + 3)?
- 13.A distance-time graph shows a car travelling at a constant speed, covering 90 km in 2 hours. Work out the car's speed in km/h.
- 14.The first term of an arithmetic sequence is 5, and each term after that increases by 6. Work out the 8th term of the sequence.
