- 1.An arithmetic sequence has first term 40 and common difference −6. Work out the 9th term of the sequence.
- 2.A plumber charges a £40 call-out fee plus £25 for each hour worked. The total charge, £C, for a job lasting h hours is given by C = 40 + 25h. Work out the charge for a job lasting 3 hours, and name what kind of statement C = 40 + 25h is.
- 3.The graph of a straight line has equation y = 4x − 5. Beth says the y-intercept is 4. Work out the correct y-intercept.y = 4x − 5
- 4.The first four terms of a sequence are 2, 6, 10, 14. Priya says the nth term is 4n. Work out the correct expression for the nth term.
- 5.A sequence has the position-to-term rule n² + 1, where n is the position number. Work out how much bigger the 5th term is than the 4th term.
- 6.The perimeter of a rectangle is given by the formula P = 2(l + w), where l is the length and w is the width. A rectangular garden has a perimeter of 46 m and a length of 14 m. Rearrange the formula to make w the subject, then work out the width of the garden.
- 7.The diagram shows the graph of a straight line, drawn on a grid numbered from −5 to 5 on both axes. Which equation could represent the line?
- 8.A plumber charges a call-out fee plus an hourly rate for a job. The total cost, £C, for a job lasting h hours is given by the formula C = 40 + 25h. What does the number 40 represent in this formula?
- 9.Solve x² + 7x = 0.
- 10.A geometric sequence has first term 3 and common ratio 2. Work out the 5th term of the sequence.
- 11.Which of these rules generates the sequence 6, 11, 16, 21, …?
- 12.A table shows y = x² − 6x + 5 at these points (x, y): (0, 5), (1, 0), (2, −3), (3, −4), (4, −3), (5, 0), (6, 5). Using the symmetry shown, write down the x-coordinate of the turning point.y = x² − 6x + 5
- 13.Which expression is equivalent to 3(x + 4) − 2(x − 1)?
- 14.A pattern is made from tiles. Pattern 1 uses 4 tiles, pattern 2 uses 7 tiles, pattern 3 uses 10 tiles and pattern 4 uses 13 tiles, with each pattern using 3 more tiles than the one before. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the number of tiles used in pattern n.
- 15.Two numbers have a sum of 45. The larger number is 9 more than the smaller number. Form an equation using n for the smaller number, and solve it to find the larger number.
