- 1.A taxi charges a £3 fixed fee plus £2 for each mile travelled. Write an expression, in pounds, for the total cost of a journey of n miles.
- 2.The first five terms of a quadratic sequence are 2, 5, 10, 17, 26. Work out the next term in the sequence.
- 3.The diagram shows a distance–time graph for a cyclist travelling at a constant speed, for the first 6 minutes of a journey. Distance is in kilometres and time is in minutes. Work out how far the cyclist would travel in 20 minutes at the same speed.
- 4.Make x the subject of the formula y = 4(x − 6).
- 5.Solve x² + 3x − 10 = 0.
- 6.A line segment has one endpoint at (−6, 2) and its midpoint at (−1, 5). Work out the coordinates of the other endpoint.
- 7.A sequence has the position-to-term rule n² + 1, where n is the position number. Work out how much bigger the 5th term is than the 4th term.
- 8.The point F has x-coordinate −1 and lies 6 units above the x-axis. Write down the coordinates of F.
- 9.Oliver has m stickers and gives 5 of them away. The number he has left is L = m − 5. Work out L when m = 8.
- 10.A photo printing service has two adverts for its price. Advert A: cost in pounds = 3(2n + 4) for n photos. Advert B: cost in pounds = 6n + 12. A customer says the two adverts always charge the same amount. Is the customer correct?
- 11.The graph of y = mx + 6 passes through the point (−2, 0). Work out the value of m.
- 12.A gas company charges a standing charge plus a rate per unit used. The total cost, y in pounds, for using x units is given by y = 0.15x + 20. Work out the cost of using 200 units.y = 0.15x + 20
- 13.A straight line passes through the points (0, 4) and (1, 9). Write down the gradient of the line.
- 14.The simultaneous equations y = 3 and 4x − y = 9 are given. Work out the value of x.
- 15.A curve has equation y = x³ − 4x. Work out the coordinates of the point where the curve crosses the y-axis.y = x
